Our delivery drivers either don't knock, or knock and don't wait to see if you answer. Our door opens onto a public pavement near a school which has a lot of traffic at drop off/pick up times.

We specify to leave by back door if not in which is through a gate not far from front door, but apparently that is too much for them.

Even had an argument with a DPD driver when I asked him as he was walking alway (not having waited for me to answer the door) why he hadn't waited for an answer, or even just left at back door as specified, if he was in a hurry. He threatened me with not delivering my parcel next time and just taking it back to the depot saying 'undeliverable' if I made a fuss. I made a fuss. They confirmed the delivery instructions and said it wouldn't happen again, but it still does.

Some drivers leave the parcel in our neighbour's outdoor store, again without knocking - we are almost always in due to disabilities, but at least it's safe in there, I suppose, although we don't know the neighbour well, he seems like a nice guy and wouldn't steal a parcel, but the driver doesn't know that. A family member's neighbour used to take in parcels all the time and deny they were delivered to him, but that was way back when they didn't specify which neighbour took in the parcel.

I understand that the drivers are under huge stress and pressure with a high workload, but surely the company loses out if they don't deliver safely?
I find DPD about the worst.  I've known their delivery drivers to just throw "sorry you were out" cards onto my front lawn without even attempting to deliver.  I can't fathom why.  I used to face oncoming traffic from one of their depots which was terrifying at time.  One nearly smashed into me then told me I was going the wrong way down a one way street.  Despite the lack of one way signs, road markings indicating it was a two way road, and several vehicles travel in the same direction behind me, he was still adamant it was a one way road.

I have a letter box. It would be lovely if Royal Mail managed to use it once in a while instead of slinging my post in the porch contrary to their own guidance.
Same at my previous address. Porch door open, instead of using front door letter box the post would just be left in the porch.

From a seller's point of view, it would be good to have the option to only deliver to click and collect locations and avoid the doorstep nonsense altogether
You have the option to use a delivery company who doesn't dump packages on doorsteps, random gardens on the same street, or wheelie bins containing dirty nappies etc.  As a seller, the responsibility for delivery is yours.  I know even Royal Mail and Parcelforce employ the occasional people with very low standards, but if you can't trust the delivery service, don't use them.
I'm yet to find a reliable service, and it depends who you are buying from - most sellers don't offer a choice, or only a choice between two.

I might have just seen a miracle in operation Evri just waited for me to open the door before walking away- that's a first ! It was a new delivery person, using a private car rather than the usual man in a van, so he's almost certainly new to the job and hasn't worked out that he has to get away before the door is opened.

Delivery driver pressed our ring doorbell yesterday, asked me where he should leave the parcel as I wasn't in and the delivery instructions said 'shed next to front door'. I told him the shed to the left of the front door... His reply; " It isn't a shed as its made of plastic so I was confused"

Another one rang me (mob was on the parcel) asked where I wanted the parcel left, I told him, he said he couldn't deliver it as they cannot take verbal instructions.

They wonder why they get so many complaints.

There’s no point complaining about the delivery service whilst, at the same time, demanding that it is as cheap as possible. We can have service or cheapness, but not both. We all know that, so why are there these long threads complaining?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

This thread is a couple of months old bumped by a bot. However your point still stands, although the options to choose a better more expensive service is not always available.
