Octopus Cosy 6 actually ready for market?

  • Octopus seem not to be "against standing charges".  In their recent 1 July tariff update, they kept the SC on their standard variable tariff at the same rate as in June, claiming that "For over 3 years our default standing charges have been cheaper than any other large supplier, and will continue to be so".  EDF's new standing charges are in fact 8% cheaper for electricity and 17% cheaper for gas on its variable "tracker" tariff.  The difference is that the Octopus rate is free to leave while EDF has a £25 per fuel charge until 31/7/25.  Unit rates are virtually the same for Octopus and EDF now.  But Octopus's claim to have the lowest SC among the majors seems demonstrably untrue, at least in this region.  The CEO blames regulated costs for the high SC, but these seem not to be a problem for EDF?  Switching tools suggest I can save £35 per year by leaving Octopus for EDF, all down to standing charges.

This is the heat pump forum. You'd be better off posting that on the energy forum.

  • I just switched do the Cosy tariff - we will see how it works out.

Since I mostly work from home and my other half does work from home, it makes it easier to work around the cheap times. Plus, we have a newer home, a ground source heat pump, and water underfloor heating on both floors. Since the floors stay warm for a long time, I think if I have it set to basically not run the heating during the peak time, it should work out ok. We'll see.

We did the sums and even with a lot of shifting on the October 1st rates for cosy we wouldn't realistically get an average of less than 19.5p kwh and that's heat pump off 4-7pm

Conversely we expect an overall average for the year of 15p kwh on Agile.

How does your annual unit cost curve vary? My current Agile rate from June with no HP but and an EV is 9.34p and am going to do a full year to achieve a baseline for calculations for a potential A2A heat pump.

Like others I'd aim to avoid 4-7pm, and with a log burner and well seasoned scrounged wood wouldn't anticipate that being a problem here on the south coast even in a cold snap.

No heating on yet this season, but I wouldn't mind a bit of wind to bring down the Agile rates..!
  • Do you need Cosy 6 to use Cosy tariff or would it also work with Daikin? On the fence between Cosy/Daikin now...
