yesterday read an article online (can't find it now!) about making a garlic spray.
Essentially garlic boiled in water, cooled and put in spray bottle. seems the snails & slugs hate the stuff but you need to do it regularly as it will wash off in the rain. Another option is to add some liquid soap which makes it cling.

  • Do not mention slugs: they completely wiped out my autumn plantings of Raab and endive. If I ever hear anybody say they are part of nature's web and leave other wildlife to help keep them down I shall personally hold their head down in my allotment pond and hope they swallow one of the frogs! :-)

It's all too late, I'm afraid. When certain kinds of people gain positions of power, they'll cheerfully remove rights and responsibilities enjoyed by citizens on the grounds of ecological necessity and safety. Frequently, they do this without much understanding, or evidence to support the changes.
Did you ever see the scientific evidence that home gardeners were killing animals with metaldehyde slug pellets? I looked some years ago, but I couldn't find it. If it existed, did anyone bother to highlight and debate the evidence properly before introducing the ban?
Similarly, is there a place where home gardeners can now see the proof that the ferric product works well? Again, I've no idea where that might be. All I know is the ferric pellets disappear inside my polytunnel....and there are no slime trails to suggest slugs and snails took them!
