Slugs are definitely worse this year. I'm making a real difference by patrolling at dawn and dusk with a pair of scissors and snipping them in half. A few weeks ago I was finding dozens and dozens both morning and night, now it's maybe a dozen a day in total. It'll never eliminate them but it does work. Time consuming to start with, looking under all the big shrubs and bushes and lifting pots etc, but it soon gets faster and easier.
As I suspected, somebody has been adding soil to my garden. The plot thickens...

Slugs in my garden have become more intelligent this year. They know I check the garden at 10pm and CUT them in half. So, this year the clever ones have decided to hold back until 11pm.

Last night at 10pm hardly any slugs. Later patrol number 2 carried out at 11pm & I got loads of them.

If their intelligence increases exponentially then by Christmas they could be in charge of the country !
    This made me chuckle!

This thread is so reassuring, I was starting to think that this was the way my garden was now and I should stop trying to grow veg.

Remind me please, why are we dissecting slugs?

I don't want them to munch through my flowers but neither do I wish to inflict pain!

I have some council open land on the other side of my fence which is feeling the benefit of the snails and slugs I'm hoicking out of my hostas. I find a litter picker an ideal tool for picking them up.  When the robins were nesting I was putting them on top of my nearby bin store and they didn't stay there for long.

I was pondering gathering them and heading to the local duckpond, but I'm not sure if bird flu is still an issue and whether ducks can eat too many slugs, anyone know if this is a bad idea?

  • I'm not sure how it's possible to remove slugs from ones garden without inflicting pain.......If there is a way please let us all know.

I'm not sure which would be less painful.....cut in half, eaten by birds, sprayed with vinegar or salt, slug pellets...I wouldn't fancy any of them.

If you give us your address we can post them to you alive if it makes you feel better !

That's a lot of water used to eat a teeny bit of slug!
