On occasion "complying with the law" is an act of stupidity and making a complaint is one way of getting the law (or its interpretation) changed.

Bit of a long shot but have you tried googling it? If, as suggested, it's a charity the information may be easily available. It may take a number of attempts, with sort code and account number, just account number, sort code as a 6 digit number without and breaks, SC with - between the 3 pairs of numbers etc. Might also throw up a company that is being paid for something.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. One would presume that it is the financial institutions who will have the knowledge and experience to know how any law should be changed to improve matters.Neither I nor my MP are likely to have the slightest idea of exactly what needs to be changed to ensure that banks reveal account information when it is appropriate to do so.0

If your MP doesn't have the slightest idea how to make improvements it is highly questionable why they are in the job as a legislator. It is precisely their job to propose changes to existing laws/new laws and to vote on the same proposed by other MPs2 -
another idea.....given that you are not a bank or other large company and your father is deceased (condolences) why not post the sort code and account number here and let the MSE collective see if the recipient can be tracked down!?!?!?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. I've only scanned through all these posts so apologies if someone has already suggested it but it could be something as innocuous as transferring a regular amount to another savings account in his own name (perhaps a regular saver) or to an S&S ISA or just to a general investment account.
If you have the sort code then post it on here - there is no risk in doing that and someone on here might be able to suggest something from it. Don't post the account number though...0 -
A few thoughts - father (RIP) banks with Barclays so if they cannot tell him who the payee is - it is because it is going to a different bank.
If we knew the sort code it might shed a few things - such as if it is say 30-00-00 (Lloyds HO) or say 50-00-00 (Nat West HO) it might suggest that the monies are going to an institution rather than an individual account.
Can the bank provide a copy of the original standing order? (Sorry I have skimmed pages 2 and 3 of the thread sorry if it has been asked)? Depending on its age they might have the original or a scanned copy somewhere - that is something that the Barclays bereavement team can help you with.
Again if we had sort code and the order has been going for many years - you might be able to say from that code whether it is going to a branch of another bank nearby to his (much more difficult these days because of centralisation and automation). If so you might be able to say it is going to a church, institution, a family member, even an unknown family member etc etc.
With the information to hand you can do a bit of digging.
I knew staff members of other banks as they knew me and often (pre mobiles or texts though!) and we would phone each other to check out suspicious transactions or people. I know in this day and age the bank would probably sack me for it but just say that you find the money was going to xyz bank - would you know anybody there that you could ask - pretty please is it possible to let me know who the account belongs to?
If you don't know anybody perhaps walk in to a branch yourself with the death certificate -, will - if there is one and explain. You might get to see a sensible person - who knows.
Good luck in your search1 -
I hope OP is speaking to the bereavement team about this & not someone in the front line call center.
Their system should show the sort code & account, but that is all. They will not know anymore than that unless someone at the bank has come across it before.
So good guesses in above posts as to where it may have gone.Life in the slow lane2
