You say a mouse is failing, do you mean a mouse or the built in trackpad? If it's the built in trackpad again that could be replaced or an external device could be used like a mouse but thats not always as convenient as the built in option.
If she wants to stick with Apple and wants it to be a Laptop then the MacBook Air is your only real option unless you have a much bigger budget to go for a more powerful but heavier MacBook Pro.

I've replaced the battery myself but don't think I would have a go at a trackpad. Seen the videos and too much potential for errors for my liking.
Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid1 -
Costco frequently have offers on Apple products.
They've recently had some very good deals on Macbooks and 24" iMacs, I would have been very tempted if my nine year old MBP wasn't still running so well...1 -
