Money Moral Dilemma: How much should I pay towards the holiday home I've rented with two couples?

  • As all the amenitises are there for all to share, i think that splitting the cost 5 ways would be fairest. A couple aren't going to use the same as a single person.
Same would apply for meals out.

Decide before you book who is paying what , or opt for the smallest room and pay one fifth . Arrangements should be agreed before you sign up for it .

Presumably these people are your friends, so if 5 people are going, I'd split the cost 5 ways.

People here are discussing this like they're brokering some kind of business deal.
  • I'm surprised there is even a debate about this and I agree wholeheartedly with all the comments that believe a 5 way split is the fair way.
I'm shocked that the notion of a 3 way split should be considered.
I go away as a single with 2 couples regularly and one of the reasons that holiday rentals work for us is precisely so that the cost of accommodation can be equally shared as otherwise I would be paying double occupancy as a single person as single rooms are nigh on non exultant in hotels .

Last time we did a big group trip it was pay per room.  Some were happy to pay the premium for a double room to themselves, others preferred to save some cash and split the beds to create twin rooms.

If you stopped at a hotel in most instances you'd pay for 3 rooms and it'd likely seem cheeky to get the 2 couples to subsidise the single person for their room.  The only difference being that the single person would have reduced costs of food or other incidentals.

That said, in most instances places don't have 3 equal rooms, so if there is a trade off to take the smallest / worst room because you don't need as much space or facilities (assuming no en suite / less storage etc) then that would seem a fairer place to try and balance what each person pays (was in a similar situation in shared rental in my 20s and at the time was happy to settle for a single bed in the box room for reducing rent from 33% to 25%).

Five people - five way split as far as I'm concerned, although it probably should've been discussed before you agreed to go away with the others

If you want to go on holiday with them again pay one third of the rent.

I agree - 3 way split seems the fairest to me.

I also agree with the comment that was made above
"If you feel it needs to be done differently, then next time have the conversation before the booking is made and not after.."

  • We go away as a family which includes couples and singles and always divide the cost by the number of people not the number of bedrooms. Also we use the app Splitwise. It works really well for sharing out all the costs.
  • I reckon a five way split would be fairest. The question of spacial accommodation is irrelevant. These are matters that should have been discussed before the booking was made. I wonder how the couples who wanted the three way split would react if the single person suggested bring a couple to stay in his/her room! If these people were real friends, none of them would try and take advantage of the single person.
