I am in a couple. If this was me. I would expect to pay a 5th.4

Why didn't you decide this between yourselves before booking?
Next week's MMD:
We've rented a house that has three double bedrooms, with the couples taking a room each, and me taking the third. How should we split the food bills?
The following week's MMD:
We've rented a house that has three double bedrooms, with the couples taking a room each, and me taking the third. I'm doing the driving in my car.
How should we split the cost of fuel?
There will be wear and tear on my car.

3-way split for the rental. All facilities are being used equally; each room including ultimate laundry, room cleaning (assuming "cleaning/laundry" is included in the rental cost as the owner will need to have that done after you've left and new renters arrive)A 5-way split for consumable costs - food, drinks, meals etc - and per-person costs on any entry/travel costs1

In my friend group, there are three couples and a single person. I would never dream of asking the single person to pay as much as a couple. They are essentially paying for themselves twice then! I think you should split it equally between the five of you 🙂 the fact that the couples have not suggested this would make me think twice about holidaying with them again, unfortunately.5

You have the same size room as the others so you should pay the same. Obviously when it comes to eating out you should split the bill five ways, each couple pays two-fifths and you pay the other. I think you should have sorted it out in advance!1

Presumably if the two couples had gone on holiday together, they would have paid for a house with two bedrooms. With you coming too, the cost of the holiday is three bedrooms. i.e. 50% more. The single person should therefore probably pay a third of the new total.2

3 way split, providing all the bedrooms are similar size and you're not being shoved into a tiny box room. Whilst you are there costs like food shopping should be divided 5 ways equally and pay your own way for meals and trips out.0

I've been on a holiday like this (2 couples, 1 single) and we split it 5 ways as 5 people - it didn't even occur to me to split it by room, even though I was part of one of the couples and it would have benefitted me.
You're only (mostly...) sleeping in that room, so why should the single person pay twice as much as everyone else? If a couple was going on holiday alone they'd likely be sharing a room, so they're not doing anything different in this scenario.
I've also been on holidays as groups of friends where most share a twin room and 1 person gets a room to themself, but again we've always split it equally.
As for how to broach this with the other people - perhaps the %s compromise suggested above is the best way2 -
3 double bedrooms - so 3-way split. If you want a better deal on your accommodation, maybe you could bring someone who doesn't mind sharing with you. Some costs are per 'package' and some are per person. Whilst you're single you'll find that a lot of deals are geared towards couples. That's life.1

5 people.........divide by five (I bet yours will be the smallest bedroom......possibly the one without an ensuite)! The couples, no doubt, will choose their's first.1
