My 16year old daughter will be travelling in South America in a couple of months time and I'm looking for reccomendations for best account to open for her for card spending abroad.

Obviously shes to young to open a chase account but are there any good alternatives?

I just saw this mentioned on the MSE weekly mailing:

Nationwide FlexOne children's bank account (not prepaid - so no monitoring facilities)

I'm not sure if totally above board, but you could order a Wise card in your own name and just give the physical card to her.

You can download the app and easily put money on the card, it's a debit card so no risk of her overspending and you can transfer more money easily on your app if she's in a bind.

The exchange rates are much better than you'd get on most accounts (only really beaten by no fee cards exchanging at the VISA rate, which are generally only offered with premium paid-for bank accounts).

Not only against the T&Cs of any card but you probably dont want your 16 year old daughter in a South American jail when they accuse her of theft/fraud for having someone else's card.

Starling are fee free and do a Teenager Card for those 16-17

A tad dramatic, I should have said the same to my mum when she gave me her card to buy milk from the corner-shop when I was a kid. But fine, it's a valid point.

Are you aware of any non-mastercard alternatives?

I have a secondary card on my Caxton Account for my son. I never use the primary card but can add funds to it from the UK if he needs money in a hurry. The card is in his name.

I don't know if this information is current, but if it is Caxton allow the secondary card holder to be as young as 13: Caxton - Legal hub
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
