    Thanks Rosieben & Scotrae.

It would seem principles come at a price! I'm not really nearer a personal conclusion, but it was interesting to read 2 responses received, one for each side of the fence ;) . Not quite a representative sample, but it doesn't get more evenly split than that.

    Cheers girls

...And just to clarify that I entirely understand the point of view of the single mum on the programme and others who are on a very restricted budget. I don't mean to 'preach' at anyone. All I meant to say was that I think that, value for money, the price I pay for a free range chicken locally is covered by how much further it goes and how many more meals I can get out of it. Now that I'm curently trying to budget on only £25 pw for the GC though i appreciate that many people just don't have a spare fiver in their pot for the week to buy one chicken in the first place.

I hope that nobody took offence to my post. It wasn't meant that way.

    Hi tattycath :rotfl:

Nope no couldron...just after years of "eating a pea more than a pig" i have finally got to grips with "proper portions" much to hubbies delight...he is a soldier, but always said i make meals to big..now he is fine with what im serving-there is always plenty in if he was hungry but it rarely happens :T trust me we aren't going hungry -if you could see me -you would know i like my food ;)
I am doing the OS weightloss thing at the moment, so proper portion control has been the best move so far... freezing up extras straight away to stop me picking :o 3st 11lbs gone but still loads more to go :p

Scotrrae, when I said about people preaching I was actually thinking of Hugh Fearnley whatsisname, he is an arrogant little twerp at the best of times isnt he (and I always think he could do with a bit of a scrub up) :rotfl:

not offended by anything you said, its good to share viewpoints ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

I often feel bad about buying the cheaper chicken and today I have had the first chicken for dinner in about 8 mths.I only purchased it before xmas as it was in the coop on special offer at half the kg cost.I planned to eat it over christmas when i had friends round.
I buy quorn fillets and quorn chicken style pieces more often these days.Kids like the taste.i like the ease and I feel better for not eating a poor chicken.

That doesn't make me a vegetarian though. My mum owns a smallholding and should any of her chickens arrive on the table then I will gladly eat it.
I fully understand the budget side of things too and understand the concept of the "rubber chicken".
Each to their own is my motto :)

  • Scotrae - :rotfl: Oh Blimey, everyone's at it now ;) .

I don't think any of us has offended anyone... it's as rosieben says, it's the person who's down to their last 50k or similar and has to trade down from organic to free range probably. ....... and I'm not singling out HF-W (just in case he's reading this - I've got most of your books!!), there are plenty of people on the cause of the farm animal. I think chickens are the thing for 2008.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies.

Hi, I've a family of 8 to feed and actually no idea of how much we spend on groceries! If it's ok I'd like to join in, but just try to be a little bit careful this first month and then see how much I have spent then move on from there.

    Ness.
