Iv'e been thinking of giving diluting milk thing a go too.
I can't believe the amount of money saving tips i have found on this thread, you are all so helpful.
Charley:p
yes I buy whole milk and dilute it half and half with water. I only used to buy semi skimmed though, so anyone who's used to whole milk may want to dilute less at first. I use it for milky coffee, tea, cereals, cooking etc and its fine.
As several of us have mentioned before, not a good idea to do this for kids, they really do need whole milk... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Hi. Bananakins, If you go to Morrisons regularly it might be worth getting some morrisons savings stamps-just a couple or so each time you go (if budget stretches to it). I do this and just before christmas I had saved enough for £100 spend on christmas groceries. (effectively giving me an extra budget for a very expensive month). Hope this helps.GE 36 *MFD may 2043

re freezing over ripe bananas - a great treat for when you have a sweet tooth is to just make a double slit in the top of a frozen one and bung it in the microwave for ??? 30 secs? Can't remember. maybe 15 and then check. Sometimes I sprinkle in cinnamon or honey into the little space in the slit I've made, but even without that it is lovely to eat it from the skin with a teaspoon. hhhmmmm warm and very very sweet but still a piece of fruit!

Izoomzoom,
You can slice your potatoes finely, layer with some finely sliced onion, season and add stock ( cube is fine) to reach top of potatoes and bake until potatoes are cooked....pommes boulangere I think.

evening everyone
Belfast girl.... you can take the pepper seeds or tomato seeds out of the ones in your fridge and grow from them..nice n cheap.. courgettes grow really well too,
Even though you think tomatoes are cheap in summer.. just think what else you might buy whilst you are there in the supermarketi think im trying to keep out of the shops as much as possible -and growing your own helps me with that...you can always use old net curtains etc to cover salad when its growing to stop the bugs if you have lots of them
for some reason mine were left alone last time :T
I have just been to the shop that had veg seeds on offer..carrots, raddish lettuce etc were 10 packs for €1.50 and beans, peas etc were 6 packs for €2.50 :j .... we also managed to get some "growing covers/cold frame type things" - a bit like a tent but only about 2.5 ft tall for me to start my veggies off in.. they are 6ft x 4ft so loads of space and have flaps to roll up/down to let the light in :j hubby got me 2 as a late xmas pressie - i was going to have a cold frame at €50 these cost €37.90 for the 2 and i have a lot more space and they are easier to move around too :T .... guess who is gonna have veg coming out of her ears :rotfl:
Anyway whilst i was at the shop i spent another €8.55 of my grocery challenge... not stuff i desperately needed now, but it was too good to miss
:-
2 x 3lt lenor = 2 for €5
12 lovely soft loo rolls - €1.68
1 bag pasta = €0.39
1 jar jallepeano peppers €1.48
the loo rolls will last us through february too and the lenor -until heck knows when :rotfl:
will get off and update my signature and my shopping budget book/spread sheet
keep up the good work everyone-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
Afternoon all
I've done most of my shopping for this week today......£16.27 at Sainsbury's...that's fruit and veg for the week, plus a chicken, plus 2 of their loaves 'cos their own make wholemeal loaves that we LOVE are on offer for 49p for a large loaf!!:T :T :T ....not bad considering they've gone up to almost £1.00 each recently.
Total sounds a lot, I know, but my DH eats MASSES of fruit......like 3 bananas, an apple, a pear and possibly an orange as well, every day   ...I just about manage an apple OR a banana a day myself- why can't fruit taste as nice as a biscuit. (sigh)........(I nicked that expression off Rosieben and altered it a bit to suit my own purposes....thanx Rosie, it was very appropriate - hope you don't mind)
I'm still experimenting with the breadmaker that MIL lent me and I have to say the bread is very good and very filling......got a herb loaf in there at the moment.
Anyway, off to do a bit more thread reading......good luck all!0 -
Just a quick post I will catch up on all your posts later (when the kids in bed) another nsd for me yippee, I am the sort of person who before would have been thinking up any old excuse to get me out spending (on food though funnily enough, not a shoe and handbag girl unfortunately)..
Going to do the weekly shop tomorrow at T's have some points vouchers to use so will go back to Aldi next week, I have done my shopping list though using Tesco online to get all my prices sorted!!
Going to look up a meal suggestion now for chilli prawns and cook that for me for tea (chicken version for dh) the girls have had jam sandwiches and ds has just had spagetti on toast (sounds bad but they all have a meal at lunchtime)
Catch you all laterJun GC £250.00/£12.40 NSD 3 / 30

bit late starting this challenge but I know that I have spent £73.82 so far. I'm going to give myself a target of £250 for the month as I am completely clueless as to what I spend on groceries... I think thats quite a lot for one person (my son eats most of his meals at nursery) but I've been doing lots of expensive things like buying my lunches at work and going to the supermarket without a menu plan or list. oops. hopefully as soon as i stop doing all that then i will save loadsFeb 2008 Grocery challenge £101.74 (budget £150)
Jan 2008 Grocery challenge £177.40 spent (budget£250)0
