I visited Greece a couple of years ago with a friend and she had forgotten her pin number. I noticed the contactless sign on an ATM and she was able to withdraw money with her card without a pin. It solved a problem for her but I did think if was a security risk.

Could you withdraw without unlocking the phone though? If it needs biometric security, no different to a PIN

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • My bank in UAE (ADCB) allows contactless cash withdrawals but only through their own ATMs and a pin is definitely required. I don’t even bother getting my phone out to withdraw cash, Apple Pay on my watch is my preferred method of withdrawing cash :)

She didn't use a phone - she used her debit card

The incentive for the banks to develop this is they won't need to issue physical cards any more. Just a virtual card that can be added to your Google/Apple wallet. That would save a huge amount of money and also get them some 'green' credentials for reducing plastic use.

I see cards becoming like chequebooks in the next few years - the physical card will be optional, issued on request rather than automatically. But before that would be accepted by customers there needs to be a solution to withdrawing cash.

That's what I meant - if you didn't have the card but did have the phone you could work it that way to avoid the possibility of a snatched card being used

I'm not sure if she could have used her phone without the pin - I know she hadn't set up to pay that way

Most Santander ATM's in the UK let their own cardholders tap their contact less cards then ask for a PIN (I don't know about if it works with another bank's cards or not). I am also not sure if it works with your phone or not, doesn't the card in a google or apple wallet use another number not the number printed on the card ?

When I withdraw cash from their ATM's I prefer to use the card contactless and input my PIN as it negates any issue with the ATM eating the card. Also works the same at Banco Santander ATM's in Spain and Portugal

I personally wouldn't describe that as contactless.
