Scaffold Board Shelves – Best way to mount?
Comments

I put these up - you can see the brackets we used, but other styles/colours are available. Each board is around 125cm (I cut them to size)

The boards were reclaimed and in a sorry state, but after sanding and a few coats of wax, they scrubbed up nicely and show the grain.
That's a plasterboard wall behind, and I used fittings similar to these

Ensure you get the appropriate weight-rated fittings and there should be no sagging. We have a few heavier items on them now, but probably no more than 10kg each.
The boards did shrink and warp a little over time. This meant they can "wobble" when sitting on the brackets, but you can screw the underside to the bracket too, if you get ones that has those holes pre-drilled.
However, be wary of this if you go down the batten route.1 -

If you located studs in that wall could have had shelves knocked up before breakfast, the fixings referred to will not do in Op,s situation as walls are brick.0 -
Thanks, I just remembered I did do that at one side for each board, so fixed with long screws into the studs, but the other sides did not line up with studs if I wanted brackets to be equidistant at each side, so went for those fitments.Eldi_Dos said:@MeteredOut

Agree those are not the right fitments for brick walls.2 -
When fixing heavy items to stud walls the old adage measure twice cut once is not a bad one to follow.MeteredOut said:

The cuts were exactly as i wanted them, but studs at 600 spacing meant limited options to the placement of the brackets if I wanted both of them fixed that way. Those plasterboard fixings take a lot of weight though.Eldi_Dos said:

Thanks everyone.
So, the brackets are up (went with 3 in the end), shelves are on (simply sanded with a 80 grit, no finish, gave the front edges a nice round over)... and I've got to say, they look lovely.1 -

Here they are!
Some of you will know these alcove units too…
Excuse Tofu the cat. He’s just about claimed everything in this house!
P.S. The units and shelves are dead level. The ceiling is well out!

That is terrific, and three brackets look right.
How chuffed do you feel!
Using scaffolding boards for the worktop also looks right, but I presume the existing one sitting there ain't for this?1 -
Yeah, four brackets would have certainly felt cluttered!
Absolutely. Scaffold boards for the top would be perfect, but does pose challenges. Would not only mean finding four that aren’t cupped too much, but also joining two boards together, then cutting along it’s length, to get the right depth. Plus, the hassle of scribing to three walls!
Just leaving these boards here for the sake of storage really. So they ain’t outside
