external hard drive

  • 256MB Ram is pretty low so I'd invest in more RAM - go up to 1GB if poss., you shouldn't need more than that if you just use the computer for going on the net. with 256mb ram, you probably find running software pretty slow (inlcuding Windows os).

but not sure what this has to do with putting music on your ipods - just checked the download criteria for itunes 7 and it says windows pcs require at least 256mb ram for music, so if you're only putting music on your ipods, you should be fine with the current setup. it does say you need 512mb ram for the additional video content though, so if you want to put movies/video clips on your ipods you will definitely need more ram.

  • Hi you don’t need more memory ( although it may make programs run quicker )to store songs on an external hard drive things you will need to consider is the rate at which the Data (songs) transfer from your existing machine to your external hard drive dont want to sit there for hours with a slow data transfer ? also the make of external hard drive also look at installing an internal drive its pretty simple normally four screws two plugs and cheaper?

External storage units have become popular for transferring electronic media between PCs and other networked devices, but stories surfacing Friday suggest some devices made by Western Digital put the brakes on sharing of the most common audio and video files.

Probably but you could also use Spybot Search & Destroy here. I was just wondering why your machine has slowed down recently.
You could have a look at the Malware Removal Sticky at the top of this board.

    That's not true at all.

First it only applies to software supplied to very specific WD NAS products. I've got a WD external hard drive for xmas that isn't affected by this at all.

Secondly it's only the software "Anywhere Access" it applies to, not the hardware itself. In the same way I decided not to use the supplied backup software and use Acronis instead there's nothing to stop you using other sharing software.

Thirdly, it's got nothing to do with the files you can put on the drive, you can put anything you like on the drive, it's purely about the sharing/live streaming aspect of the drive. That you can't share specific file types over the internet (you can still share over LAN) which isn't a feature the OP has asked for anyway. I disagree with WD's decision but it's hardly like this is a u turn or something since filesharing via NAS is a completely new feature for WD.

  • Think you’ll find a lot of people use software that comes with the item they buy…. ? also because the one you bought is not affected does not mean that others a not ? I don’t think any company should be able to stop me sharing my files in any format or type that I like with anyone at anytime after all you have bought the product

But it's not relevant here, the OP has asked about an external hard drive (none of WD's marketed external drives come with that software) not an NAS (which are the only products, i.e. just 2, to include that software), nor about sharing files over the internet (which is forbidden to be discussed under forum rules anyway).
