external hard drive

can you help, daughter and i both have i-pods and want to put some music on to them.

at the moment, daughter has been storing music on my computer, now my computer only has 256mg of memory.

I was told that if i bought an external hard drive, daughter could put her music on this.

or do i need to buy more memory for my computer.

Probably need a bit of clarification here. "256mg of memory" sounds to me like you're quoting RAM rather than hard disc/drive space.

The 256MB that you talk of is RAM. Music is stored on the hard drive, the capacity of which is measured in GB.

Not for storage of music tracks. Click on My Computer to see how much hard disc space you have left.

So at the moment you have plenty free space to store music etc. Yes you could get an external hard drive but you don't actually need one at the moment.

then a quick answer to this is no you do not need to buy an external hard drive for her music although it can be a worthy asset to have one if you wish to easily move those files around from one pc to another. If you only have one pc then maybe there isnt any need soley for the mp3 fles but still a grest asset for other back ups storage etc to help keep your pc clean and uncluttered.

All we have the computer for is using the internet,

i put all my photos on disc so non are stored on the computer.

we do not do any gaming or have any programes loaded on.

But the computer seems to be running a bit slow lately, should i up-date the memory, as id doesn't seem much.

If this has only recently started to happen, adding more memory probably would not make that much difference for general use e.g. surfing etc. What anti-virus/spyware/malware programs do you have installed? See this article here for free protection.
