Well that Didn't Work, Cancelling Virgin Media.

Last month my daughter was out of contract with Virgin Media broadband and they had put her monthly DD up to £56 a month just for internet and she had phoned them up asking them to reduce her payment but the person she spoke to said no.

So she cancelled her DD and wrote to them that she was cancelling her contract and her DD in the hope they would contact her and reduce the cost.

That was just over a month ago.

This morning her internet was switched off.

She has had no calls or emails from Virgin Media

She has now signed up with someone else for less than half the price she was paying Virgin but is Virgin not interested in retaining customers anymore?

I had the same a few months back for my aunt and uncle.   They weren't interested in any discount from the £75 they wanted.   We just left and signed up to £22 a month for practically the same speed.    Funnily enough, they'd been able to get a discount every 18 months when there was no alternative (the BT speed was 24mbps).   However, now they have bumped up the prices, city fibre is available at just the right time.

Youre not entitled to any discount, its up to Virgin if they want to offer them or not.

Obviously no-one is entitled to a discount, but Virgin are going to lose an awful lot of customers if they are not prepared to sensibly price their offerings.      Gone are the days of Virgin being a lot faster than everyone else, there are so many alternatives now.
  • Why write to them to cancel the contract?
why not simply request cancellation during the initial call!
Chances are she would have had a better chance of getting a call back from retentions!

Also have a similar Broadband comparison package to used as leverage, “ I’ve seen the same deal with Plusnet for £X amount!

Also, need to make sure you account has except marketing options on!

Cancelling the DD was also a bad move as there may still be a balance to pay. If they cannot collect, you will get missed payment markers on your record.

What are the alternatives ? I have been on uswitch and gocompare and can't get anything faster than 75mb...far short of my virgin broadband. I live in a fair sized town

She's not particularly bothered, she's unemployed and on UC.

Also her internet was switched off the day before her next DD was due if she hadn't cancelled it.

You may not have a FTTP alternative , but 66% of the country has , and therefore have Gb or even multi Gb speeds available.

For much of the time, gigabit connections is just for bragging rights. Few people really need that much speed, and many would get by just fine with a sub 30mb connection.

Yes, just got off the phone to them.  I am paying £30 for 125mb and phone line (I don't use) contract runs out next month. Went off and came back with £41 and then went off and came back with £57 with TV.  Ummm I wanted to get it down not pay more.
Told them I will be calling back next month when out of contract to cancel.
