I don't understand why people cannot use a self scan with a trolley full.

    Press bright my own bags
Lay out all the bags ready
Pick out items from trolley and bag them - freezer food in this bag, non frezzer in another.

Am I missing something that makes it more complex?
All the self checkouts I’ve used have nowhere near enough space for a trolley full of food on the scales where you’re supposed to put the scanned shopping, and as soon as you take a bag off to make space you get an error and have to go find a member of staff to sort it out. When self checkout was first introduced there tended to be a staff member to support with all these sorts of issues but nowadays, this is very rare (at least around here). Plus if you have several of the same item, they can put in the number and just scan one at manned checkouts, whereas with the self checkout you have to scan each individually - presumably because they’re less bothered about the waste of time when it’s the customer’s time. Also, the error rate is fairly high, so a big shop is more likely to encounter at least one error.

Unfortunately it’s not just Asda - my local Sainsbury’s basically never has anyone on the manned tills. Similar with Tesco. Lidl often just has one manned till open to push everyone to the self checkouts (slightly confused by the poster above suggesting this isn’t an issue in aldi or lidl). Even M&S and Waitrose often have very few manned checkouts.
I thjink Marvel1's talking about self scan where you scan as you go round the shop rather than taking the stuff out of the trolley at the scan-station to scan it & then repack it in the trolley
No they are not as none of those steps apply to that method of shopping.

I don't mind using self scan, but not when I do a massive shop
Why not use the hand zapper things then? Can scan as you walk round and bag it all up too.

I do use tesco scan and bag, but don't use asda after issues with it.

Anyway left store fuming, will now try and avoid using asda in future after this. It seems like asda has been getter worse in recent years
To be fair I have avoided Asda for decades, it has never been a pleasant shopping experience, the own brand food always seems very low quality and on the odd occasion where I have ended up using one the experience only reaffirms my views.

I regularly use Sainsbury's and Waitrose and always scan as I go using their apps, which makes things very easy. I also use Aldi and Lidl and I would welcome self scan, it would be easier than having my shop fired down the till by the cashier as fast as they can throw them.

I do understand changes away from tradition sometimes jars, but we are happily self-serving in certain situations and have been quietly content content with those. Petrol station pumps, cash machines, online banking and I guess things like ticket machines at railway stations to go even further back.

I can see it from the businesses point of view too. I guess Lidl and Aldi would be good options for those who utterly despise self checkout.

Everything you list above is a single item transaction.  That is very different to a trolley full of shopping.  At a staffed till I can sort everything on the conveyor before it goes through and bag it accordingly.  I can't do that with a full trolley and a self scan machine.  If more people did walk out and leave a full trolley or basket for staff to sort out the supermarkets may rethink their policy.
Scan as you go, you get to pack it correctly as you go round, no queues at the tills, the easiest and quickest option by far.

If people regularly left trolleys of produce at the tills they would soon find themselves banned from stores.

Sorry my mistake, I was on about the scanning your own items at the end.  My local Morrisons's doesn't have the scan as you go feature.

Happened to us a couple of years back, just before xmas so it was a fairly big shop and we had 2 trolleys.  A learning experience
because we now know there is an item number limit and a cash limit and whilst the assistant had to keep coming back to reset our
alarms who knows how many people walked out without paying or only paid for part of their shop?

Does the number of self service tills and the number of extra CCTV camera's required coincide with the increase in theft and
the increase in prices to pay for the thefts and additional security that requires no humans?

Off to Google what happened to the Amazon self service store, is it still going and still self service?

"The" self service store? There was one in my home town that's now closed (perhaps this is the one you mention), and one I walk by whenever I'm working at my office. The latter is always busy when I walk by, and yes, self service.

I've just checked, there are many stores (mainly in London). https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=GQKJHZZQDJBQN2QF

They've completely scrapped the 'just walk out' stuff in the US, as it didn't really work and they were employing vast numbers of people in India to watch on cameras. They're now self scan, but the promised 'just take stuff and AI will work it out' seems like it never worked as intended.

My local Lidl is the worst for checkouts. They have a snaking self checkout line and actively close the main line tills just around 5pm (when more people will come). Last week a member of staff had an item in his hand queuing behind me at the self checkout queue. A colleague appeared and proclaimed Oh the queues are long, come to my checkout. She proceeded to Open a checkout do the transaction for her colleague and close it again… 🫤

You might be missing that the Bagging Area in the self checkout section isn’t designed to accommodate a trolley load of shopping (for example in Lidl)… and where would you move packed up the shopping to? It has to stay in the bagging area…or the machine starts shouting 😄
Even If you were permitted to move the packed up bags back to your trolley (due to limited bagging area) you would have scanned and unscanned items in your trolley at the same time…as there is no conveyor belt at the self checkout…so you may have missed all of the above points tbh…

yes some supermarkets like Sainsbury’s have the wider, larger bagging area for their self scan, but this isn’t all shops. You’d struggle with a trolley at M&S self checkout for example…you can barely get some Percy Pigs on there 😊

To the people who say just abandon the trolley and management will get the message. 2 thoughts

    1. will management notice?
    2. Who do you think will have to put the goods back and when? In the meantime chilled and frozen produce is getting warmer…..

I’ve had ice cream cones which have clearly thawed and then been refrozen.
