I'm completely the opposite, hate having to wait behind several other shoppers and much prefer to walk up to an empty self service till.marcia_ said:

Petrol station pumps, cash machines, online banking and I guess things like ticket machines at railway stations to go even further back.
I can see it from the businesses point of view too. I guess Lidl and Aldi would be good options for those who utterly despise self checkout.
Everything you list above is a single item transaction. That is very different to a trolley full of shopping. At a staffed till I can sort everything on the conveyor before it goes through and bag it accordingly. I can't do that with a full trolley and a self scan machine. If more people did walk out and leave a full trolley or basket for staff to sort out the supermarkets may rethink their policy.

But many people are quite happy to use the self service tills.
In my local store there can be queues waiting to get into the self service section.
Less staff means more money for the supermarket2 -
Scan As You Shop is usefull as well.0

I don't understand why people cannot use a self scan with a trolley full.
Press bright my own bags
Lay out all the bags ready
Pick out items from trolley and bag them - freezer food in this bag, non frezzer in another.
Am I missing something that makes it more complex?6 -
One thing I disliked about Aldi was having to queue behind people with full trollies when I only had a basket.retiredbanker1 said:
My local ALDI has just started this - from what I could see only the walk ins for a quick one or two items were using them the trolley loads were all going through the tills.booneruk said:I do understand changes to tradition sometimes jars, but we are happily self-serving in certain situations and have been quietly content content with those. Poor girl seemed desperate for people to use them - useless management nowhere to be seen.
Now they have self service tills.
Self service tills are a godsend for people like me who only do baskets of shopping (my OH does the big shop).5 -
Aldi & Lidl have, in my area, got self service tills. There is often a queue in the nearby Morrisons, which has recently increased the number of self service tills, and it is quicker to go to a staffed till.Sometimes the queues are caused by a backlog of people wanting to pay with cash rather than card and there are fewer self service tills which accept cash.Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid0

All the self checkouts I’ve used have nowhere near enough space for a trolley full of food on the scales where you’re supposed to put the scanned shopping, and as soon as you take a bag off to make space you get an error and have to go find a member of staff to sort it out. When self checkout was first introduced there tended to be a staff member to support with all these sorts of issues but nowadays, this is very rare (at least around here). Plus if you have several of the same item, they can put in the number and just scan one at manned checkouts, whereas with the self checkout you have to scan each individually - presumably because they’re less bothered about the waste of time when it’s the customer’s time. Also, the error rate is fairly high, so a big shop is more likely to encounter at least one error.Marvel1 said:I don't understand why people cannot use a self scan with a trolley full.

Unfortunately it’s not just Asda - my local Sainsbury’s basically never has anyone on the manned tills. Similar with Tesco. Lidl often just has one manned till open to push everyone to the self checkouts (slightly confused by the poster above suggesting this isn’t an issue in aldi or lidl). Even M&S and Waitrose often have very few manned checkouts.0 -
In my 2 local Tesco Extra stores, they have trolley self service tills with larger space for items.amanda1024 said:

I'm not sure a full trolley load would fit though.
I sometimes use these tills if there's a queue for the smaller self service tills.0 -
I thjink Marvel1's talking about self scan where you scan as you go round the shop rather than taking the stuff out of the trolley at the scan-station to scan it & then repack it in the trolleyamanda1024 said:
