I'd disagree, it is helpful... maybe not the most sensitive post ever written but my question only ever related to the sofa, it's unfortunate that they revealed their relative position against it.Okell said:@DullGreyGuy - considering the OP is obviously quite sensitive about her weight, your post perhaps isn't a very helpful contribution?
I equally disagree that it was a misunderstanding of another members answer, in their very first post they implied if a limit exists it legally has to be stated which is incorrect.
Many of us, myself included, live with conditions that mean we dont fit the norm. The law doesn't state companies have to deal with every possible iteration that has ever or may ever exist; even those that fall within disability discrimination law only requires reasonable adjustment not total.
They may be sensitive about their size but if they want to buy a pair of trousers they are going to have to state their size.0 -
Very glad to hear you managed to get the issue sorted out OP! That said, I can confirm there is no law stating that weight limits must be advertised, and every single piece of furniture ever made has a limit as to how much weight it can safely bear, the same as everything does. If you've ever tried out a sofa or chair made for someone who weighs over 25st - or, say, something made for the American market - you will probably have noticed how much firmer it is. That's because someone over 25st will sink right into a standard foam density and will then struggle to get out of the sofa. Sofas made for heavier people aren't necessarily going to be comfortable or suitable for the average person so it's not like they can just make everything suitable for everyone. Fortunately the manufacturers have started moving towards building at a slightly higher weight limit these days, as the weight of your average person has definitely gone up.I would absolutely recommend trying the next sofa out in person before buying online, and asking what the weight limit is. Even better if you can ask them if it will be suitable for you and get them to put that in writing on the order, because then it is their responsibility and not yours if it turns out to be wrong. Also consider the price and quality. Cheap sofas tend to be lighter, and if you're buying made to order and paying more or less the same now as you paid for your last sofa, you're buying something that is definitely lower quality than your last one. Sofa prices have gone up on average by about 30% in the last 4 years alone!Last thing, and I'm sure this isn't the case given what else you've said, but if you get up while the footrest is extended that can mean you put too much weight just on the footrest and can cause the sofa to tip as it acts as a lever.2

Sorry but I'm going to have to challenge you on that.DullGreyGuy said:

Where does the OP imply their first post that by law a max weight limit must be stated?
