I don’t understand why the receiving bank could not see that the payment was from Clydesdale Bank, and tell the OP.

Maybe the staff was poorly trained. Recently I called credit card services of Bank A to request a balance transfer from a credit card provided by Bank B to a credit card provided by Bank A. 

A member of the call centre staff who handled the call was adamant that it is the bank B I have to call. After spending several minutes of my life trying to convince them that it is their bank, Bank A, needs to arrange a balance transfer to the credit card they issued I gave up and re-dialed the number again. Fortunately, second time round the person who answered the phone call knew how to set up balance transfers!

I always find their terminology confusing, they all it a balance transfer from B to A when actually you are making a money transfer from A to B.
