Do I need TV Licence if no Aerial? New flat? Is itvX free?

I've just moved into a new flat and it has no TV aerial (although there's a sky dish on the outside wall and I don't have a sky box either)
I've a smart TV and just watch Netflix and YouTube.

Do I need a TV licence to watch these?

BBC iplayer ( I believe I need a licence?)
BBC sounds?
itvX (read somewhere you might need a licence now?)
My5
UKTV play
WatchfreeUK
Stv player
S4C

I'm sure I don't need a licence to watch Netflix?

Obviously I want to reduce any bills and just wondering can I watch any of the above without a TV Licence and I don't have a TV aerial!

  • "Your licence gives you access to iPlayer, where you can stream on-demand TV and live BBC channels, plus thousands of hours of exclusive box sets and content.
With your licence you can live stream the latest series, news or sport online, from services like ITVX, Sky Go, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube."

Think I'm confused! I won't be watching live programmes?

From your list, the following requires a TV Licence under all circumstances...

    - BBC TV on iplayer

And the following never requires a TV Licence...

    - BBC sounds

The remainder require a TV Licence if you are watching the live streamed equivalent of a broadcast TV channel.   If you are not watching that kind of content (you are only watching on-demand), you do not need a Licence...

    - itvX
    - My5
    - UKTV play
    - WatchfreeUK
    - Stv player
    - S4C

S4C catch-up is part of BBC iPlayer, but doesn't require a TV Licence to watch.

Thanks! Sorry for sounding silly, think I'm confused. I wouldn't be watching live TV as I don't have an Aerial? So basically I can watch Netflix, YouTube, S4C without a TV licence?

You could watch live TV on ITVX, My5 etc. Thats what they’re saying. If you use the “Live TV” option within these apps then yes, you should have a TV licence.

As above, you can watch live channels on the various internet players of the broadcasters.   If you do that, you need a TV Licence.

Netflix never requires a TV Licence to view.   (This may become more complicated if they start carrying live content like Amazon does).

Youtube doesn't require a Licence to view the vast majority of content.   The exceptions are channels like Sky News which carry a live stream that duplicates the live broadcast.

You can view S4C on-demand/catch-up content on iPlayer without needing a TV Licence.

S4C has live content on iPlayer, so I'd assume you need one for that.

As you will be using BBC I Player you will need a licence. For BBC it's live and on demand content that requires a licence.

So looks like it will just be Netflix and YouTube if I don't want to pay a licence
