Morning everyone, just wondering if anyone has advice on weather to switch to Octopus Tracker? im with Octopus now on a fixed loyalty tarriff but wondering if i can save any more.
Elec .2485/48.66sc use 2700 a year and gas .0579/27.47sc use 7600 a year.
Looking on the web page says tracker rates are 13.32/53.94sc and 4.12/27.47sc, not sure what that means if it varies from day to day?

I would suggest installing the Octopus Compare app and see what savings you could make. I'm currently saving ~30% over the standard variable rate, but I'm on the December 2023 tracker. The April 2024 version may not return as good a saving.

Savings of 30% in recent months are unlikely to be replicated going forward. The SVT is now catching up with the reduction in wholesale rates, so make sure you are comparing today's rates rather than those of three or six months ago.   Then look at how much further the price cap might fall in July, do the sums again with that in mind. Fixes on offer today are in the same ballpark as the SVT.

If wholesale prices start to rise, it will feed through to tracker prices immediately, whereas there will be a lag before the price cap catches up.

  • I'm thinking about tracker as well so all comments very useful. Came across octotrack.co.uk (can't put full link as a newbie)  which has historical data for  all regions there. Their rates have minor differences from Octopus's - though over Easter Octopus itself had different rates for the same day!

What that means is highly possible kWh rate tomorrow will be different than today.

The standing charge stays the same, the kWh rate shows what it is on the day you're looking at the info and changes daily (except gas which I believe stays the same over a weekend).

Yes, if you want to benefit when prices are low and accept the risk that they may rise well above standard rates from time to time.

That's just the price on the day you looked. Every day will be different.

Personally, I've saved about £150 on Tracker since I switched at the start of February (just for gas). The savings per unit is lower now with the April drop in the price cap, but still about 2p per unit cheaper. I do check the prices regularly but over the last few months they've been fairly static.

No, I dont think tracker has gone above SVR since I signed up to it.  Now initially I was on it with a cap below SVR which basically was a guarantee, but I lost that cap last year, and its never naturally gone above SVR during that time.

Can view last 365 days of gas and electric tracker here.

Remember to look at the right region.

It hasn't whilst I've been on it.

But who knows what will happen in the future.

It might get closer. It might go above sometimes. Hard to say.
