Festivals money saving - before you go and while you're there

Hi, Jenny H from MSE here - I'm researching ways to save money on festivals, both before you go and while you're there. I'd love to know what's worked for you!

BYOB - Bring your own booze, you can do this in some festivals but not all, I did this when I went to Reading, however it has been some time since I went last, you could take the booze with camping gear, I have to be honest I am not sure you are meant to, but we all did. Also you can bring your own food, make sure it doesn't go off in the heat like pesto and pasta, tomato and pasta, or bring an ice box, electric if possible, I haven't done this but you could.

Make sure you bring clothing for all weathers, you don't want to have to spend money on a new waterproof or blanket to keep warm etc. Make sure to bring a change of clothes at least one if not two for when you really can't do without save buying new clothes, feet wise better that they are totally protected and will last through all weathers and hard wearing boots save excessive spends on new foot wear, I know in hot weather it is not ideal but there are a lot of crowds and you could be stood on, better to protect those little toes.

Also bring a first aid kit,  not good to wait for ages to get a plaster or paracetamol for those days when you can't do without. Also protect your drinks, be with them at all times, make sure you get your own. you don't want to be drugged, I am afraid at a lot of festivals there are more shady types that will do anything if the opportunity presents itself. Just be aware!

Lastly have loads of fun because the memories you take home will be impactful and enjoyed for years to come, that doesn't mean drink yourself to oblivion either or dabbling in a few things you shouldn't! Mum speech over.

It is possible to volunteer at some festivals and get free tickets in return for a few hours work each day. If you are on your own it is also a great way to meet people.

Don’t buy new clothes/outfits to take with you, neither you or anyone else will care what you wear, once you are in the groove :)

Maybe consider training for a first-aid or ambulance service who attend and offer support to many festivals.

Look up St John’s ambulance for most of the British Isles and St. Andrews’ for Scotland.

If you are camping and can take a gas stove/pan/kettle set up, consider putting a hot water bottle in your kit! The nights can be cold and damp even in july, and a hot water bottle helps just take the dampness of your bedding off at night. Also remember to layer under your bed, even cardboard or a picnic blanket will help stop the cold coming up. A bad night’s sleep can ruin your day. Peg solar fairy lights in a funky colour around the front of your tent and along the guy lines- helps you locate it in the middle of the night, and stops people falling over it. Last tip - eye mask and ear plugs!!!! Being woken by amorous campers (or snorers!) six foot from your head is no fun. Actually none of these are particularly moneysaving!
