Reporting back on this as promised for future searchers with the same issue.

Headline: The Fitbit-Google account integration is not fit for purpose!

    As a reminder:
    • I could not set up a Fitbit for my daughter because she had parental controls on her Google account. (Note this is not an age issue, the minimum age for adult Fitbits is 13 and she is 13.)
    • Even when I removed parental controls, Fitbit seemed to remember that she used to have them and still would not let me set it up.
    • It is only possible to set a Fitbit up with a Google account.
    • Argos refused to accept the return of the Fitbit because I had tried to set it up.
    • I decided to delete her Fitbit account and try setting it up afresh in 30 days (time for deletion process to action) with no parental controls.
So, it turns out that once you have deleted your Fitbit account, it never lets you set up another account with that same Google account! Lots of complaints about this on the Fitbit forums.

My only option to get it set up was to create my daughter a brand new Google account, set up the Fitbit, transfer over all her files, emails, contacts, photos, settings etc. Then make that her main account on her phone and then add the parental controls back on. (Google parental controls only allow a single account on the phone).

What a massive faff but it is now working and I didn't bother escalating it with Argos.

It really didn't seem like you had any grounds too.
I'd like to think a county court would have found in Argos's favor in this case had it of came to that.
