that's a sure fire way to set off all the account protections, account potentially compromised, etc and you'll probably get a whole batch of "suspicious login" correspondence to boot.    Which account?  Email or vpn?

As I've already alluded to if a precise location is needed, one would have to go to a court and have a good reason.  I'm still not entirely sure why you're still hanging on this.

I would prefer even a regional location not to be disclosed

Email and other services you might use logged into a VPN, especially a free or trial version with well known IP addresses.

Companies exercise a duty of care to customers, and a user randomly accessing an account from a completely different country can raise alarm bells. We've all seen the warnings on various apps - e.g. 'was this you?'

I'll be honest, this does feel a bit strange to advise on when you won't give more details, because of the obvious criminal uses of such a question.

Are you sure that whomever it is you're trying to hide from has the technical knowledge to trace an IP from an email header, access to IP routing services or could have a court ordered disclosure? I suspect 90%+ of people wouldn't even know what an IP address is...

There's absolutely no criminal intent. I will say I, even after much reading on the topic cannot trace an IP from an email header, I use outlook and Gmail, can you advise how to discover an ip from an incoming mail 🤔

It's quite technical. The web service or email software you use would need to be able to show you the full message headers. Here's Thunderbird on my PC after I've enabled the headers on an email I received from Ubereats.

[See yellow highlight] It shows that a uber IP address connected to my email provider and dropped off the email for me.

All I can tell from the "Uber" IP address is that it's actually an IP address registered to a service called SendGrid Inc (presumably a mass email sending service Uber use), that is based in Denver Colorado.

To clarify again, the IP address used by the person sending emails does not give away the street address of that person. If anything, it will show the street address of the IP address range ownership - which would be a firm.

So you need an app like Thunderbird to find that information?  I've read a few articles where it suggests it's much easier, even without a special app

Thunderbird is a just a free to use email client (I don't use webmail).

Just Google "How to show email headers in {insert name of your email service/tool here]". That should give you something to go on!

I went to the Surfshark website, and they of course correctly identified my ip address, and they were correct about my ISP, too. They then confidently stated that my address is in Reading, and they pinpointed a spot on a map. However, any stalkers would be sadly disappointed, as I live 50 miles away in London.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I've just had a read of the same page, I think.  They really go out of their way to scare people into considering their service.

My 'location' was somewhere a few miles away from my flat, but that's just because I happened to be connected to my ISP's building at that location.

So  they're not that accurate at all?  Lol  which email providers don't show the headers you need to find the ip?

I use a VPN that breaks out in Ireland (my choice, could be Albania etc), the IP address changes every 10 minutes within the range of public IPs that the VPN provider has bought from the local internet provider.

Most websites work as expected, however that are some that assume the IP is malicious as it's a VPN exit point. Google always runs as Captcha, Worldpay doesn't allow purchases, some web-sites using Cloudflare anti DDOS block.

If you're obsessive, use the Tor browser to access the internet via the Tor network.
