I.P. address

Why when I use a tool like "what is my ip?"   does it locate me 50/100 miles away?.   Yet when I've mailed someone previously they've been able to state where I am?

Because that's where it resolves to.  You won't get a physical address of 221B Baker Street without going through the courts and having a good reason to know that information.

Sometimes it may be the way your ISP sets things up or the way the websites work.  One site says I'm in Nottingham, the other says I'm in Birmingham (but if I click on "more information" on the 2nd website I get another location which isn't in Birmingham!)

Google "IP Address Geolocation" to find out more about how IP addresses are mapped to real world locations. You will see that it is an imprecise science, but might be more precise if you pay more for the service.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Can someone find my quite close  location from an email?

Not from an email you write from scratch. If the email comes from filling in a 'contact us' form on a web-page then the web-page can contain tracking tools which could help pin down where you are more accurately,

This is incorrect. The original IP address is often sent in the header of the email so they can trace it for spam purposes and can be seen if you look for it.

It depends how your Internet Service Provider (ISP) allocates address.
Some will allocate a tranche to a particular city/area.

My IP has never been closer than 40 miles with my current ISP (Plusnet).

Quite often it puts me on the North East Coast where I live North Midlands. There are tools available to
website admins that can get a better idea of where your real location is but usually it's not worth the effort
for them to do that unless your a persistant spammer.
