What is it you're trying to do? Are you trying to remain anonymous or track someone? It looks like the former.Pipcas said:Anyone use Surfshack? IP Experiences?
Yes using a VPN is a common method of hiding your IP. Though this isn't without flaws as popular free ones use the same IP's meaning some services may blacklist access from these IP's, or at least be aware of them. Less of any issue with paid for services.
I know you said 'often' so this isn't reply isn't intended to you're incorrect in what you said, but to add more information which may be useful to the OP.[Deleted User] said:
This is incorrect. The original IP address is often sent in the header of the email so they can trace it for spam purposes and can be seen if you look for it.Vitor said:
Not from an email you write from scratch. If the email comes from filling in a 'contact us' form on a web-page then the web-page can contain tracking tools which could help pin down where you are more accurately,Pipcas said:
Can someone find my quite close location from an email?tacpot12 said:Google "IP Address Geolocation" to find out more about how IP addresses are mapped to real world locations. You will see that it is an imprecise science, but might be more precise if you pay more for the service.
While this is commonly the case with desktop mail clients, using something like gmail on a browser attaches a Google IP instead.Know what you don't1 -
It's just a personal issue, I don't want to be located if possible. So, with a VPN, does it just give you a random worldwide IP that is visible?Neil_Jones said:Pipcas said:Anyone use Surfshack? I wouldn't say random, most VPN's allow you to set the specific country you want to connect to. For example, South Park is only streamable to those based in the US. Someone from the UK could download a VPN, select a US server and then watch South Park without issue.Pipcas said:

As another example, if you were a scammer planning to relieve someone of their life savings, you might set your IP to the victims country.

Yet when I've mailed someone previously they've been able to state where I am?Because that's where it resolves to. You won't get a physical address of 221B Baker Street without going through the courts and having a good reason to know that information.Sometimes it may be the way your ISP sets things up or the way the websites work. One site says I'm in Nottingham, the other says I'm in Birmingham (but if I click on "more information" on the 2nd website I get another location which isn't in Birmingham!)
What are you trying to achieve here? Finding an email service that does not divulge the IP address you were using at the time, and therefore your ISP's potential location? Looks like gmail and many other web based email services will do this.Pipcas said:Anyone use Surfshack? IP Experiences?
I found this page on Google, might be useful to you: https://www.expressvpn.com/blog/find-ip-address-from-email/1 -

A VPN won't help you in that regard, in fact they aren't even that watertight in the first place. You are not and never have been 100% anonymous on the internet.0 -
Yeah of course I'm aware of that and no it's certainly not anything that sinisterNeil_Jones said:Pipcas said:

Assume you aren't an Apple user? If you were then Apple has a partial VPN built in which only applies to traffic originating from Safari. You can set it to be roughly where you are or just the same country & timezone. Hence a website would approximately geolocate you but email would "precisely"Pipcas said:Why when I use a tool like "what is my ip?" does it locate me 50/100 miles away?. No I have an android phone. I've took the months trial with surfshack, when I change the setting to Germany would it appear to my email recipient I'm in Germany?DullGreyGuy said:

As I've already alluded to if a precise location is needed, one would have to go to a court and have a good reason. I'm still not entirely sure why you're still hanging on this.0
