Some years back wasn't there Aunt Bessies custard powder? I seem to remember that it was even better than Birds - or is my mind playing tricks (again).

Cant remember a mix with milk custard powder from aunt Bessie, but the instant is in waitrose at 67p.

No, we have never used instant. This was a tub, exactly like Birds, and I recall that it was lovely, and a different colour (paler?) when made up. As I said, I could be dreaming this....

    Shame it's no longer available.

If custard powder is just corn flour and colouring, is it worth trying to make your own? Turmeric would colour it, add vanilla essence and sugar to taste.

Turmeric would make it taste overwhelmingly turmeric-y and its distinctive earthy/bitter taste is not something which would improve custard (YMMV). Maybe a drop of yellow food colouring?
