I have been making HM custard for the past 65 plus years and have always used Birds Custard Powder its £2.00 for a drum and will make at least 7-8 pints of custard. In fact I have just made some today and its cooling in a pyrex jug at the moment Its great and a dollop on top of a slice of cake or even one of those little cake bars makes a nice pudding after dinner.Or a couple of table spoons of custard added to say some rice pudding or in fact almost anything. I've only ever used Birds as did my late Mum and I just followed her lead
I'm not keen on tinned or cartons of custard as its an expensive way to make what is after all a dessert. I make it with milk or even evaporated milk so its relatively cheap to make two heaped dessert spoonfuls of caster sugar added when your mixing up the powder makes it even nicer A diced up banana topped with some custard kids love

Another vote for Birds. I don't make custard often so it sits in the cupboard for a very long time but still mixes up well.5

Sainsburys used to do a drum of their own brand custard powder (decent flavour) but it seems to have been discontinued in favour of small packets or tins that are considerably dearer. So it's back to Birds for me, an essential in my baking cupboard.Be kind to others and to yourself too.3

I bought a bag of Birds instant mix custard powder by mistake thinking it was the ordinary one. It says to mix with water as milk powder already included but I want to add milk.Decluttering Achieved - 2023 - 10,364 Decluttering - 2024 - 8,365 August - 0/45

The price of tins and the individual tubs of ready made are eye watering. The Aldi one which does come top in blind testing, is 75p for 500ml, which is comparable to making a birds pint of custard.
I didnt know anyone else other than birds do custard powder. I last used it making a cake.3 -
birds drums of custard just £1.49 in farmfoods

I always use the Birds powder (drums) so that I can vary the amount of sugar I use. Because I find the ready-made custards too sweet for my palate, I add only about one teaspoonful of sugar per half-pint of custard, and find that quite enough for me.“Tomorrow is another day for decluttering.”Decluttering 2023 🏅🏅🏅🏅⭐️⭐️
