I have never seen a 'free for all' on Jet2.  All seats are allocated.  I always prebook and have always had the seat I have booked.  My understanding is that if you don't prebook you will be allocated a seat when you check in.

But at both ends it was a free for all getting on which rather negated part of the reason for paying for seats.

When we booked and paid for our seats last time flying out from East Mids and back from Alicante, there was no separation at all both ways.  They made no effort at all to ask people to board by rows.
There's no correlation between seat selection and boarding procedures - on many airlines you can pay a surcharge (or acquire membership points, etc) to board ahead of general access, but that's a separate process from prepaying for specific seats, i.e. buying nominated seats doesn't get you to the front of the queue.  Likewise, some airlines will board by row numbers, but again that's independent of seat purchase.

As we waited on the tarmac at East Mids to go across to the aircraft  I told someone in the queue, who were saying they were in seat around 30, to go the the back steps.  They were going to board at the front as no one had told them otherwise.
Perhaps some would appreciate that sort of intervention but it does risk being told where to go yourself!
Ref the intervention from me the 2 ladies involved were so pleased I had told them.

I wonder if anyone can help please?  Due to check in on line for a holiday in a couple of days, which is the 28 day prior point.  I wonder if anyone has any tips please.  Did not book our seats as last time we did it to get where we wanted that part of it was ok.  But at both ends it was a free for all getting on which rather negated part of the reason for paying for seats.  Do they fill up from the back first i.e. those who check in on line first will be at the back and other later check ins will be further forward.  Or is it better to check in on line early giving us (a couple) a better chance to be seated together.  Thanks for looking.

No, it doesn't negate it at all.
You have an allocated seat, whether you have paid to choose that seat or not.
I can never understand why people want to rush to board the plane.

A free-for-all is when you board an aircraft and don't have seats allocated at all.
We experienced this back in the late 1980s when we flew Aeroflot.
And again from Holguin to Havana in Cuba.

Perhaps I badly worded that.  What I mean is that there is no boarding by rows for example when there is an airbridge (i.e. front door only) let those in rows 20 to 33 get on then 10 to 19 then 1 to 9 for example.

Yes, I think your wording confused some people as there were comments about being split up from partners.

I've flown with lots of short-haul carriers and have never paid extra to choose seats.
The worst has been across the aisle but it wouldn't bother us if we were sat at opposite ends of the aircraft.

I have certainly been on Jet2 flights where they call people by row number.  I have seen people who try to jump the queue by ignoring that announcement being sent back.  I'm not saying it always happens but it certainly can.

Boarded a Jet2 at Palma in March by airbridge. Seats in the rows at the back were called forward after those with kids. Then middle and finally front.

The only problem with getting called last too board is lack of space in the overhead lockers as some passengers take more on in hand luggage than others :)

That's why airlines should clamp down on size of hand luggage.
I understand that Jet2 are doing so.

I agree airlines need to rigorously enforce hand luggage size and weight.  I have seen people struggling to get hand luggage over their heads to get it into the overhead lockers, and luggage which will barely fit.  Jet2 does now have a charge, yes another way to get money, to guarantee hand luggage can be taken into the cabin.
