if you know anyone who never runs anti virus install Avast - its free & runs at windows start up before you can sign on, configure updates automatically & it will save you alot of time on maintainance cos thay cant be bothered doing it or educating ones-self, runs at start up for 5-10 minutes, they soon get the knack of needing to run pc for 10 mins before being able to use it for added protection make everyone a use GUEST account or LIMITED ACCOUNT for Windows & you as password protected administrator, no-one can install nothing before you check it out for being spy-free, setup/use Remote Assistance to install/fix things ---- find R.A start----> help & support ----> R.A
    > always use " save invitation as a file ( advanced ) " unless they use Outlook Express - NEVER use messenger as its the old Windows Messenger & open to hacking ( thats why I say uninstall it earlier ) and windows is open to danger after all your hard maintainence work, if you use this option Windows reinstalls the program from windows files - a big NO NO

or do what i do, nothing but a firewall and acronis image then reset it to default every couple of months, its a toy os so i uses it for games and dont want security patches slowing it down.

It makes me wonder how many perfectly good computers get binned and new ones bought just because the owners think that's what they need rather than sorting out what they've got!

Couldn't agree more, but Don't discourage them!! LOL

My PC is mainly cast off bits. Main cost was XP disc £55 and DVD rewriter £18. I've also sorted brother and nephew with basic PC each, all for nothing.

I'm at the higher end of the average age for these pages, but I've only been around PCs a couple of years, but now getting asked to look at other peoples problems.
The majority of problems seem to be related to the sheer amount of carp people think they must have for a PC to function,e.g.I cannot (despite showing him) convince a neighbour that his PC will function perfectly well, probably better,if he gets rid of the AOL browser and all its associated bloatware.

Surely, if a PC is only a couple of years old and only used for surfing and email, then it makes sense to give it a good "service", even if it involves paying the local independent guy for a couple of hours work.

OK I'll get off my soapbox.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Thanks for all your help. I'm now back on my laptop, so I will go through and thank you all for your help!

I have now discovered that we need DDR PC2100.
The cheapest I have found is from Amazon, and I think I'll go for 1gb from there (you don't have to upgrade in pairs like with laptop memory do you?)
Once I've stuck the extra memory in, then I'll have a bash at cleaning some crap off!

    cheers
