well if you pay for your specs then maybe a TFT may have saved the eyesight sooner. Ophthalmologists recommend TFT screens over CRT in order to alleviate potential problems, but we'll agree to disagree, ormus0

It's a pretty good spec system, apart from the RAM.
Upgrade that, it's the cheapest and most effective way forward.
And definately decrappify it, uninstall toolbars, avoid Internet Explorer, run something like Lavasoft AdAware.
It's way more than capable of running XP at an OK speed.Russia is HERE0 -
well, crucial can't help me...We're sorry.
Crucial currently does not have any compatible upgrades available for your particular system.
their scan came up with this info:-
<LI class="">
[*]CPU Speed: 2191 MHz
anyone know how I can find what I need, or suggest somewhere else I could get it from??0 -
did the scan mention what mtype of memory your system had fitted? i.e. ddr333 or ddr 400?0

the OP was asking about upgrading the spec of the puter performance not the operator, ie the mother!
and if you really do need to upgrade the operators eyesight then a cheap pair of reading glasses at a fiver is better than a 100 quid tft screen!Get some gorm.0 -

LOL. That seriously reads like it was written by someone with shares in Samsung. Also, for every post there is about the benefits of TFTs there'll be one by people using CRTs who swear their clearer, etc.
I'd stick with the 'if its not broken, dont fix it' rule with the screen. Besides, its not going to make the machine run any faster and thats the main problem here.
Definitely agree on the RAM upgrade, and getting rid of Norton ASAP!0 -

The main issue with CRTs and eyestrain is that CRTs are prone to glare in a brightly lit room, such as an office, etc. Something easily resolved if its a problem with a cheap anti glare screen.
We dont know if this is an issue for the o/p, and certainly beyond the scope of what they were asking here.0 -
AFAIK there's absolutely no correlation between wearing glasses and what type of monitor you use. There may indeed be less eye strain etc using LCD but that doesn't necessarily translate to permanent eyesight/wearing glasses problems. I personally wear glasses but I started wearing them before I used computers much, if at all. Nowadays I'm in front of a monitor all the time but my sight hasn't changed in years. It may just be anecdotal but the point is that one can't make a sweeping generalisation that CRTs ruin your eyesight to the point of needing glasses."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

way back in the day crts used to run at stupdly low refresh rates and im pretty sure that has been proven to cause eysight dammage. frankly with 22" lcds stating at £120odds its a nonissue these days, you cant even give crts away.0 -

I think there's a vast difference between what you're "sure has been proven" to what has actually been proven. I'll be happy to accept such a claim if there is any evidence but so far all there's been is personal opinion making generalised claims. I've personally to date not come across any such evidence that there's even a correlation, never mind causation. I mean what supposed damage do you mean? Myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia??? I have to say I spend an awful long time in front of CRT monitors (relatively old ones) and all I have is myopia so it can't be something that affects everybody otherwise I'd be getting worse or exhibiting other problems."She is quite the oddball.
