    well, crucial can't help me...

    anyone know how I can find what I need, or suggest somewhere else I could get it from??

    Try a different system analysis tool. Here's one:

    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,62604-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html

    From the description it looks like it will tell you what type of RAM you need. If it doesn't there are other tools out there.

    RAM and possible re-installation is all that is needed.

    As long as there are no mechanical faults it will run like a dream.

    Download, extract and run: CPUZ

    It will give you the information that you need.

    You could upgrade but with all the entry-level computers on the market, you might as well buy a new one, as you'd have to buy basically everything if you were upgrading it.

    e.g. the old motherboard won't support newer processors and ram

    Why buy a new computer when the current one will work just fine with a bit of tidying up and £30 worth of RAM?
    It makes me wonder how many perfectly good computers get binned and new ones bought just because the owners think that's what they need rather than sorting out what they've got!

    I hope mums on broadband.......

    1 Norton - off with its head

    2 remove all other un-needed programs, check for updates on the rest, remove all traces of windows messenger from program files, delete whole folder

    3 install Microsoft Baseline Analyzer----> run & follow ALL advice

    MBA is windows update for professionals, but easier & quicker than windows update, keep running installing and running installing and rebooting & on & on till complete

    4 install 512 MB RAM £20 tops

    5 adaware, crap cleaner, avast virus, zonealarm firewall- all free, install in this order

    6 then re-run first 3, install opera browser - set as default, install windows live messenger ( if she uses it ) from live.com, only WLM forget all the other crap they offer you

    amazingly no-one has said :-

    7 all programs--->accessories
    >system tools---->disk defragmenter ( run overnight )

    windows rearranges files back to default " like " a fresh install

    6 windows update - search & install " custom" files for hardware updates

    if all that fails to speed up PC do recovery disc but use jellybean to get her XP code first

    additonals: BT modem protection if mums on dial up

    charge mum 25% of what new system price would have been for your IT skills, well below going rate while teaching her wrecklessness costs money

    essential: go to pub - you have spent upto 24 hours between a sleep sorting it all & need a few large drinkypoos

    required : slap mum to head for having no pc maintence skills, she has internet access and can teach herself anything ! that goes for any internet using person !

    do we have condoms to protect ourselves from viruses while pleasuring ourselves or not ? the internet is no different........

    ooppps me bad - SORRY, sleep deprivation ! ironically caused by my sister & her lack of PC maintainence & guess who got to bed for 2 hours sleep at 9am yesterday morning, gggggggrrrrrrrr

    worse thing ? i had to do my nieces new laptop days before xmas - 2nd hand & rarely used - sold as spares or repair as owner did not have SP2 and thought it was !!!!!!ed ??????? IDIOT!!!!

    even worse - dads dell is up next week for its anually overhaul, same as sis never once has he run any anti virus programs i installed in March, and its " going really slow " gggggggggrrrrrrrrrr

    if you know anyone who never runs anti virus install Avast - its free & runs at windows start up before you can sign on, configure updates automatically & it will save you alot of time on maintainance cos thay cant be bothered doing it or educating ones-self, runs at start up for 5-10 minutes, they soon get the knack of needing to run pc for 10 mins before being able to use it for added protection make everyone a use GUEST account or LIMITED ACCOUNT for Windows & you as password protected administrator, no-one can install nothing before you check it out for being spy-free, setup/use Remote Assistance to install/fix things ---- find R.A start----> help & support ----> R.A
    > always use " save invitation as a file ( advanced ) " unless they use Outlook Express - NEVER use messenger as its the old Windows Messenger & open to hacking ( thats why I say uninstall it earlier ) and windows is open to danger after all your hard maintainence work, if you use this option Windows reinstalls the program from windows files - a big NO NO
