  • That electric usage is huge. Do you run a bitcoin mining outfit? Or a couple of electric cars?

That electricity estimate is huge assuming you have gas central heating. What do you have that uses electricity?

i dont have anything unusual   apart from i have a projector instead of a tv set , i didnt think that would use up so much electricity
Do the bills you have been receiveing so far match your energy usage?

My worry is that i am not being billed correctly but i assume that as its a computer thats working it out this should be accurate however as i said at the start  i don't think im an above average energy user so i don't see why my projection should be higher than the energy cap
Why not build a simple spreadsheet as I have done. I am able to see at a glance where I stand.

As you haven't been there long, the total estimate given by the supplier comes from the previous occupants. The actual readings for electricity or gas don't look high. I wonder what the previous occupants were doing!

Can you look at your gas meter please - and for the letters m3 or ft3 - and also note the serial number -   now check this info against your bill.

You've used 513 kWh of electricity in 5 months. That costs (about) £140; your actual electricity usage appears to be very low.

You've used 550 units of gas in the same time period. That's likely to be m3 (but you should check as per Robin9's post). If so, that's 6140 kWh, which costs about £430 (and that over the coldest 5 months of the year, although it's not been a cold winter).

Just give EOn a call and provide them with your actual (not estimated) meter readings, and ask them to set your direct debit accordingly.

Also ask your neighbours whether the house used to be frequented by druggies. The previous owners might have been growing wacky baccy!

I've looked at the meter and it is m3 but i cant see the serial number of it on the bill. When i logged onto put my readings in, the website was saying that i owed around £500 for this month. This is why i am concerned about signing up to a direct debit as i am assuming that the company would have taken the £500 from my account before i had put the readings in.  It also gets messy to keep track of refunds to understand how much i am getting charged.
I really dont understand how e.on are coming up with these projections and  then sending a bill which i have to ignore  to be honest i didn't have this issue with the previous supplier in my last home

Should i change energy company ?

Our annual estimates are also all over the place currently as we have similarly to you been in our house for around 6 months. Your readings don't suggest anything out of the ordinary for you though.

The projections end up being out because while the supplier has to provide them, in your case they don't have anything definitely to work with - you've been in the house 5 months, and those have all been "high use" winter months too - and it seems likely that your predecessors were very high users - these two things are combining to mean that right now, your supplier really doesn't know what you might use.

No need to change supplier unless you want to for any other reasons - just keep an eye on your readings, make sure you submit them once a month to ensure accurate billing. I'd also suggest that you switch to DD paying by the variable method - this is where the supplier bills you as usual, then takes the amount they have billed from your bank account by DD. It works out a lot cheaper than payment on receipt, but you still only pay for your actual use in a month. as you have been doing that anyway, you don't need the usual "budgeting awareness" caveat added to this, either! (If someone was on standard monthly DD and as considering changing to variable, we generally warn them of the need to budget for high-spend months in the winter by setting aside money during lower spend summer months to cover it.)  They do have to bill you, and notify you on that bill when the payment will be taken by the way - so no, they can't just take an amount out before informing you how much it will be.

Can you have a second look at your bills please -  has the supplier been using your readings - indicated by a letter C or your read - or E meaning estimated.

Edit                          and was there a big debit from your last bill which you hadn't paid by the time the last bill came in ?

I have just received a bill from e.on energy and in it they say  that they estimate i will pay £3000 for electricity and £1100 for gas  this year. I live in a 2bed house and dont think i use a lot of energy . I'm also out at work during the daytime around 3 days a week. I pay my bills via cash when the arrive  .
My questions are :i) Is this projected amount reasonable   ii) i thought i read that the energy price cap is £1600 if this is true then why is my projected energy bill almost three times this amount ?
As you have only been in the house for a short period, Eon don't know how much you are going to use.    You don't appear to know how much you are going to use (although you should have some idea by now).    So, part i of your question couldn't be answered by us as you have given us nothing to go on.   Now you have given the units, it appears that you are not using much and the Eon estimate is high by comparison.   Now you have actual readings for almost 6 months, (and that is the 6 month period when you use the most), you can get them to reduce their estimate based on those 6 months.

Part ii of your question is you misunderstanding the price cap.      It's not all you can eat for no more than £1600.  its a hypothetical average use that then calculated backwards to generate the maximum unit price.    However, the unit price is multiplied by your use.  So, if you use 2000 units, then you will pay 2000 x unit price.  If you use 1000 units then its 1000 x unit price.
