although obviously the incoming cold supply is a fair bit warmer in summer than winter.

I doubt it. The temperature underground is pretty stable all year. That's why ground-source heat pumps generally  turn in consistently good COP figures.

What I would have expected too but personal experience suggests the water does get colder in winter and this (not very scientific) study saw wide variation:

I've only been logging cold water temperature for around 6 months - Aug/Sept, it was up around 22°C, and during the winter, closer to 14°C. And no, I'm not going to shower with water that cold !

Are you monitoring it where the pipe comes out of the ground?

Within a foot or two after where the pipe enters the house.

And now plumbed in. Going to be a few days (weeks ?) before I refill the system and can start collecting data.

First graph in - A couple of radiators down as I'm plastering upstairs.
Just the instantaneous power at a flow temperature of ~52°C. Need a spell of cold weather to do some more tuning and get some representative plots.

Brilliant - and are you able to measure the power into the heat pump at the same time?!

As per earlier post, this is with a gas boiler. I fitted the heat meter so that I could instrument the heat demand of the building and get a better idea of heat pump size needed when the time comes. Now that spring is here, I won't be needing the heating for at least six months.
