FWIW, the gas supply at FIL's bungalow was turned off and capped by the gas engineer engaged to service the boiler!
Having got quotations for its replacement and those for a cleaner alternative energy source we asked Octopus to have the meter removed. They have now given a date for this and from when the SDC will be removed from the account.
While Octopus appear to be actively co-operating with customers seeking to have the supply and subsequent SDC removed in pursuit of a cleaner future. BG on the other hand probably have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo.

How can BG even charge you a standing charge?
Surely if you are not using gas, have no meter, and therefore no supply, you can just close your account with BG?
If it is a duel fuel account, just get them to move you to a single electricity account.  You have been fed some false information.
    Hope you get it sorted.

Gas removal is often a 2 stage process.  Meter then street supply if deemed needed.

Read the ENA guide link above.

The property strictly still has a supply up to the old meter cap point.  That could for instance spring a leak.

It's upto the local gas DNO company to determine if the gas pipe needs removal or needs or can be capped at street level.

A process that happens for free 12m after meter supply point capped and meter removed.

As above ENA link makes clear by putting "no longer pay standing charges" as the first item under meter removal, I believe the OP should no longer be paying the c32p per day SC.
