  • look into booking directly with hotels rather than packages, sometimes you can find better flexible rates. Also check Airbnbs, I've spotted some great self-catered places there.

We went Costa Adeje with Jet2 this January (B&B in an aparthotel which used to be a timeshare development) which worked well. Had a studio apartment with full cooking facilities (which we rarely used) but having a lounge and balcony was really nice. Price for next year is a lot higher but we managed to find an Airbnb apartment in the same complex for less and have booked our own flights.

Just to let you know that many Airbnb apartments in that area are already fully booked from around November to March 2025.

For consistent weather at that time of year you really need to look at the Canary Islands. In January we had daytime temperatures of 26c and 19c in the evening. Mainland Spain weather is cooler and a lot less predictable.

Thank you, is Costa Adeje in Tenerife?

Yes, it's just up the coast from Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas on the South coast.

When I went to the Costa Adeje it was very windy - great for some water sports but none too comfortable otherwise.  Someone with more knowledge will be able to advise on how frequent this is and maybe it was stronger than normal for us - we were told that it is the usual trade wind direction when we were there.

Have you looked on booking.com to book an apartment or hotel for a month. Cheap flights can be booked with budget airlines quite cheaply. Get a private apartment with a washing machine and you will probably get away with a 20kg checked bag or two 10kg carry ons.

The Canaries will have the best mid-winter weather but will also be the most expensive and a lot of apartments book up well in advance with people going back to the same owner year after year.

The south of Spain will still be pleasant. I've just got back from a long weekend in Malaga and it was a very nice 21C during the day but you needed a jumper or light coat in the evenings.

Otherwise if you have a month to play with then you have time to go further afield such as SE Asia where once your airfares are paid for accommodation and other costs are lower.

Have you thought about going a bit further afield?  We went to Thailand for a month in January and compared the costs to a month in Lanzarote with Jet 2.  There was hardly any difference in the costs and the meals out were much cheaper in Thailand than in Lanzarote.  We booked the flights and hotels ourselves separately.  Weather hotter all day in Thailand too.

We had thought about New Zealand, we have friends and family out there, but I’m not sure if I’m up to the long flight, I have health issues.

Thank you , I will look at Thailand, we love Thai food, so that’s a good start , thank you
  • There was a programme on Thursday night ITV I think about cheap holidays. A young man booked 28 days in Turkey for £938 AI. They did say quite a bit was closed as out of season. A lot of the talk was about not booking for the typical 7,10,14 days but the bargains were on the 8,9,13 and 28 days.
