A month in the sun winter 2025

Options
My husband promised me when he retired, we could have a month in the sun,

Trouble is looking on Jet2 etc it’s more expensive than I thought it would be 😩

So what’s the best way to book? Happy to go self catering, looking at Costa Blanca or Costa del Sol or maybe Canaries, flying from Manchester no set dates.

I have found recently that Jet2 Holidays have been uncompetitively priced, maybe look at Easyjet Holidays instead.

I think the OP will find that all holidays have increased considerably over the past 2 years since Covid restrictions were lifted.  Jet2 certainly won't be the only ones to have done so.
  • Quite a few people have mentioned the substantial price increases for trips similar to yours this year and next. The Canaries are a good choice for 'Winter Sun' and less popular islands such as Fuerteventura may give you better value albiet in a quieter environment. Many people I know spend up to 3 months there during the winter period and keep their costs down by sourcing an apartment locally and basing themselves in residential areas close to holiday spots. Taxis are cheap and plentiful and if you choose wisely you will have a good local area with a few resturants / bars etc on your doorstep and a more holiday orientated experience a 5 Euro cab ride away. Retirement also brings advantages when booking flights - i.e. avoid (usually) more expensive weekend flights and book your outbound /return flights with different carriers if that is cheaper. A decent apartment with WIFi and UK TV also provides more comfortable 'downtime' - you will be there for a month after all.

Indeed - back in the autumn we booked 10 nights HB on the Costa del Sol for late Spring on a TUI deal - now the exact same package is nearly £800 dearer.
The weather in Spain in the winter months December/January can vary - the Canaries is a more attractive option in that respect, although more costly.
As a general rule we've found that Half Board is a better deal than Self Catering when comparing the relatively modest price differences - and a month of eating out will become expensive unless you are willing to cook in the accommodation - and that's hardly a holiday for the lady, assuming where she is the principal catering officer !!!
My better half refuses to prepare meals on holiday - and I fully agree with her attitude and position on that.

Why don’t you try and just book it yourself.  Get flights then use say booking.com to find self catering or cheaper hotels.  Or join the Facebook page on the area you are going and ask about accommodation.  We have found it’s not much dearer to go long haul, still get return tickets to Sydney for not much over £1100 and flights to canaries are about £600.

We had a month in the winter sun in Oman (Muscat). Loved it. Worth a look although only direct flights are from London.

The thing that has put me off Half board is the lack of space, if I’m stuck in a bedroom with my husband, I might kill him! Thinking a self catering apartment will allow us to have more of our own space, also a fridge to keep milk and drinks cold
  • There's no answer to this dilemma !!!
