If this is VAT, why on the screen grab shown above, doesn't the value of Fuel Tax equal 5% of the energy charges shown?

You can't go by that view. You need to see the bill to see where it's come from.

You would have to look at the actual bill, not the balance summary to answer that...

Regardless of what is shown on the actual bill, that’s a very strange line to have on the transaction summary. I can confirm that mine (on the app) just shows DDs taken, then electricity and gas use costs.

  • Thanks for posting! We've just had the switch done to us too. We finally confirmed that it is  just a different presentation of the 5% tax, combined for both electricity and gas. And did the latest balance summary in March that row has disappeared, maybe Octopus changed the presentation now.
  • My last Shell style PDF said £4.63 for VAT for electric and £8.30 for VAT on gas.
On the Octopus site this is shown as Fuel Tax of £12.93 which is the sum of the electric and gas VAT amounts.
The 5% VAT is on the amount BEFORE VAT is added.  If you calculate it as about 4.76% then you are using the amount including VAT (Clue:  1/105 subtracted from 1 gives you .047619 which is 4.76%)!

Mine is showing fuel tax also also they have changed my billing cycle rather than 25th the bills were usually released they have changed it to the 11th.  Hopefully the direct debit date will remain the same even though the release date of bill different.  So rather than charging me a full month they have stuck a pro rata payment in there.
  • Fuel tax is definitely Vat (on electricity/gas) but it is misleading to describe it that way and may confuse businesses who claim Vat if described this way on the Account Summary. The detailed bill shows it as Vat.
  • Hi all. On a different matter but still regarding the move from Shell to Octopus. Check your swap over dates. I discovered that Shell had charged me to the 9th of Feb and Octopus had started charging me from the 8th of Feb. After queering this with them, they admitted this was wrong and credited me with £30.00. Everybody should check their swap over dates.
