We have a wool duvet, it's 4.5 tog and more than warm enough for winter for me and DP.

My parents always had separate single duvets, as my Dad got hot and my Mum was always chilly. It made much more sense to individually choose their preferred warmth levels, and if DP and I needed different thicknesses, I would do likewise.

  • Separate bedrooms entirely I think.

Electric (over-) blankets have been a game-changer for me. That is in addition to the thermal throw and 2 x 15-tog duvets for me, just setting it for an hour lulls me to sleep. I cannot be cold!

Or perhaps twin beds if there's no option for separate rooms
  • No need to go as far as single beds or separate bedrooms! Two single duvets of different tog values on your double bed will solve your problem. I would definitely recommend down as a filling.
  • I'm the cold one in our case; our solution is two duvets - full size 7 tog down duvet with a second, topper duvet also down, of 4.5 tog. Plus we have a heated underblanket with dual controls. Other half's side isn't even plugged into the socket.
The topper duvet lays, folded in half, across the bottom of the bed and I pull it over me when necessary.
When OH is too warm he sleeps on top of the 7 tog and under the 4.5 tog duvet.
In warmer months, we change to a 4.5 tog with a 2.5 tog as the topper.
It's an expensive purchase at first, but the 100% down fillings mean a comfortable, light weight even when I'm under the two.

Thank you everybody. I think we are going to try the Scandi way, separate beds/bedrooms is out of question. But how to compare wool/down/silk duvets for temperature regulation? Perhaps one also should take into account the outer cover, should it be 100% cotton?

Could you try out the sleeping arrangement with existing bedding for now? (e.g. a folded over king sized duvet or blanket gives you effectively a narrowish single). It may be that once you're in your own heat 'bubbles' then the temperature mostly sorts itself out. Then you can each buy whatever you prefer for feel/ weight. If you run hot I'd probably just do a light synthetic duvet that can get washed often (singles are much easier to wash!) but I know people that absolutely swear by wool.

Silk duvets are very light in weight- and warm, but as I said before, AFAIK  they can not be cleaned so it depends how accident prone you are!
Goose down is very cosy and lightweight.

Cotton covers are probably heavier (depends on the quality) but cotton is warmer than poly-cotton.

Wool is considered good for being both warm & cool- naturally wicks away the moisture but I haven't personal experience of wool duvets.
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

So, this silk duvet can be machine washed at 30 degrees, but it's not recommended to do this very often, so if you're someone with serious night sweats, I'd avoid silk.
