Severn Trent disgraceful increases

Options

Severn Trent increase for metered properties +5-6% whilst unmetered is +15% and the reason provided is unmetered properties might use more water…….really they might use 3x as much water!

This is not shown on any of the literature they have sent out with the latest water bills for 2024 and although they might say it’s on the website this information, in my mind is being hidden as they cannot provided a justification on why the difference between metered and unmetered properties is so different, this difference is unethical and immoral to hide this information. Over the past 3 years my bill has increased by 41% which is outrageous with the current climate where people are finding the economic crisis very difficult to manage. I believe the Severn Trent are taking advantage of unmetered customers and the hiding by saying the actual increase is the combined figure. They are also doing very little in contacting their customer to see how they can point this difference out and advise on whether to move over to metered accounts.

Seems perfectly fair to me - if you have unlimited access to water then you should expect to pay more than those who are careful with their consumption.  If it persuades more people to move onto water meters, it's worked!

Just wait until all are on water meters & watch those bills go up.  They all want their pounds of flesh.  If they get one million from half their customers on meters and 2 million from the others, do you think they are going to accept only 2 million when everyone is on meters.  Not a cat in hells chance.

Eventually the prices will have to go up to pay for all their (& other water authorities) pollution.  They have been able to get away with it for years but the time to stop is now. Before they kill off too many of us.  After all if they do they aren't going to get paid.

Also with ST, not had the 2024/2025 figure yet but my bills have gone down by over 10% (£199 - £172) since 2021 as metering has helped concentrate my mind and I am now using 20 m3 less per annum.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

I know what you mean but I've got a meter (Severn Trent) and looking at my payments for this coming year I thought I must have a leak somewhere judging by how much it's gone up by.

Revenues are capped by the regulator.
Domestic accounts are not the only source of revenue.
Not everyone can get a meter!
People who can't have a meter, however, can have an assessed charge.

They need a certain revenue to continue to operate.  They are bad enough at their jobs re polluting our waters so they are going to need turnover one way or another.
  • Hilariously, when I phoned to ask them why my standing charges had increased by 46% in a single year they carefully explained at length how the standing charge costs are influenced by the distance between my house and the main road. I told them that my house has not moved 46% further away from the main road in the past year. They didn't find that funny, but I did!
