“Perfect house…” BUT same street at PARENTS

I loved my parents and turned down a job that meant moving away as I didn't want to be that far from them, especially as they had retired and would naturally most likely need more support as years advanced.Being close by was great as I would pop in on the way home from work most days and it was easy to take them out at weekends (even though my Dad drove but again as he got older he appreciated help with shopping or just going out for a pub lunch). However watching the Bill Bailey pub walk program today and hearing how Alan Davies was abused by his Dad after his Mum died, it reminds one that not everyone has a happy relationship with their parents, and probably would want to be as far away as possible from them.Short answer - this is far too personal a question to ask on an internet forum IMHO.3

Where I live is majoritively older people, and I can honestly say that while I'm younger by at least 15 years, I have the worst social life. These people are never in! Cruises, theatre trips, weekends away, trips to Lourdes, organising fetes and galas and fundraising in general. There's an endless whirl of dinner parties to share whatever the wine club have on offer this month. The couple at the end have just completed on an apartment in Malta so they can over-winter there, possibly spurred on by he couple next door to them who bought an apartment years ago on Madeira to over-winter there.
Not that the OP suggested they expected free child care or themselves having to be on hand for help, but if they're anything like the folk round here you'll have to make an appointment so they squeeze you in ha haa! And good luck to them I say!0 -
Friends got divorced after her parents moved to the same road. It wasn’t that the parents interfered, it was that they themselves always felt watched and that the parents would see who was coming and going and what they were doing. It took a toll on their relationship.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I live about 5 minutes walk from my Mum but not on the same street. She doesn't make many requests yet but being disabled myself I am very limited in what support I can provide anyway.
So I'm not worried about social services trying to pressure me into caring for her when the time comes (and with her it's when not if), I'm simply not capable.
She has some support now living in sheltered housing with a pendant alarm. I was clear with the latter recently, offered to go sit with her but they would still need to attend to get her up.
For me I live totally privately but haven't far to go Mum's when there is an issue I can deal with, that suits me making my life easier especially as I don't drive.1 -
My daughter and her partner bought the house next door to us (in fact, it's even the semi joined to us).
We have good relations both ways, I'm available to do jobs on the house without a long drive and can pop in and look after each others pets if out late or away on holiday.
We both just have to be mindful not to interfere or comment on how we live or conduct each others lives.3
