The shutdown of E7 radio teleswitching (RTS) is due to the BBC LW transmitter being obsolete and beyond economic repair and maintenance. Not part of some cunning state or industry conspiracy to phase out E7. Teleswitched customers will all be moved to smart meters, the deadline having been pushed back again to some time in 2025 (it was originally 31/3/24).
There are well over a million households using E7, and will continue to be so for many years. As more TOU tariffs become popular, and smart meters near-universal, that customer base will probably decline.
Interesting, thanks. There seems to be some controversy over this, so I went back to dig out the episode where it aired - it was in the last few minutes of Saturday 16th December's Radio 4 Money Box programme. The comments were made by Emily Seymour, introduced as the Energy Editor at Which. Here is what she had to say:
"... so traditionally there were Economy 7 meters, so many people may have come across those in the past where you would have two different rates, so you would pay a peak time rate and an off peak rate for your energy. Now those have mostly been phased out, but what they're being replaced with is smart meters, and what anyone who has an electricity or gas smart meter knows is that it's very accurate in being able to tell how much energy your using at any particular time. So that technology opens up the energy market to the potential for much more personalised energy tariffs where you're paying, very particularly, um, you know, particular amounts of money for particular units of energy used at particular times. At the moment that's not something that's widely available, it's really down to energy companies, and also the energy grid, the electricity network, different local auth.. like there's a lot of people involved here in putting those sorts of things together, but I hope we start to see more of that technology being used to bring costs down."
Even after my E7 meter was ripped out and replaced with a standard smart meter, my MPAN retained its Profile 2 flag, identifying my supply as E7, and this prevented my from switching to some tariffs that didn't support E7 meters. It was a pain getting that removed and when I did all was well, but I know others have had more difficulties with their local distributor reclassifying the meter than I did.

Just signed up for this in East Midlands knowing can cancel depending on next weeks new cap.

Also why does every thread get hijacked by Octopus Talk. I would like Octopus to have their own forum to spare us the endless posts about it...

Ahhhh what you are missing is the original poster of this deal put this on the well read Octopus tracker/Agile threads as well and the responses come from people there as the "system admin" created this new post but other conversations had already started on the other Octopus threads.

Staying on topic with this EDF fix with predictions set for the SVT price cap of around 20p kWh come July 1st it might be in your interest to wait for the next round of E7 fixed tariffs could be 10p or even 9p kWh on the night rate?

I hope so.  My 8p EDF off peak rate finishes in September and wasn't looking forward to that but I may get lucky.

It was discussed on a recent episode of MoneyBox Live, but the evidence is all around, with suppliers offering a more flexible range of TOU tariffs driven by smart metering and radio teleswitching being turned off.
So just gossip then because E7 is not going to be phased out anytime soon, there's too many people with NSH that (for them) work happily on E7 and provide them with the heat they need/want (as well as Hot Water tanks). The remark by Emily Seymour "Now those have mostly been phased out," is totally misleading.
I've become totally disappointed, disillusioned even, by the standard of technical reviews from Which in recent times that I'm seriously going to look at cancelling my subscription. There's plenty of reviews elsewhere these days, many from people with the technical qualifications to know what they are talking about!

I definitely won't be upgrading my storage heaters then
Neither will I. And it will only be at such time as one breaks that I'll look at HHR NSHs. At the price they are, the payback time on currently available tariffs, there'd have to more suppliers than BG offering such good deals as one being currently offered!

Will probably be 9p by July.
Certainly looking forward to EDF offering a rate like that come July  >:)

UPDATE on my earlier posted EDF E7 fix.  Unfortunately the excellent looking EDF E7 night rate of 11.15p didn't last long.  ☹️

Today the new ofgem energy price cap was announced and EDF have in response now done a version 2 of the 1 year E7 fix and they've unfortunately raised the night rate to 13.55p and the standing charge to 55.71p.

So i hope a few people had nabbed version 1 of the 1 year E7 fix because the version 2 higher night rate and higher standing charge now make this E7 fix look pretty rubbish to me.  ☹️

Here is the unappealing version 2:

    Tariff name

Here is the latest version 6 of the earlier mentioned EDF E7 Fix.   The region is East Midlands.

I see the exit fee is down to £50.  So it will be interesting if that remains the 1 year fix exit fee from now on.

    Contract details

    Tariff name

    EDF Essentials 1Yr Mar25v6

    Fixed term ends

    31st March 2025

    Payment method

    Direct Debit (Variable)

That's an extremely good SC for the East Midlands.
Here's the figures for the SW - SC 67.93p/day; Day Rate 27.99p/kWh, Night 10.90p/kWh
