Suppose you did sell the Royal Doulton pieces and got £200 for the lot, albeit they cost £1500 originally. Wouldn't you be annoyed that Ebay reported the £200 as 'income' to HMRC rather than the rather more substantial £1300 loss? But of course, how are they to know the full story? Ebay is ignorant. The onus will be on you to prove you didn't steal everything.

And what about all those things you gave to charity shops to resell? There may be hundreds of pounds of losses there, if only they were itemised. Indeed, where's Ebay's corresponding list of all the cancelled items that didn't sell? Ignorance rules.

Why? Personal sales, so wouldn't be subject to tax anyway. You do not make a profit or loss on personal items.

  • Why? The declaring of supposed 'income' to HMRC, above 30 Ebay sales. For starters, the extra paperwork and hassle. Then your historical 'proof', assuming you have any.

You can definitely make a profit or a loss on personal possessions. e.g. You can give them away for nothing. As in zero. Or you can make a killing on some collectables. You can even do nothing and watch the value of your postage stamps boom to 15 times their purchase value. The £1K or £1700 figure is completely arbitrary.

Yes it did, but I certainly made the best of it. I am pleased both at the amount of money I made (and I'm going abroad later this week on just some of the proceeds) but I'm also pleased that I've started to make a proper dent in the stuff that I have hoarded for years.

I'll let the current listing period run out and then I think I'll be deleting a fair few of the items and just charity shop them, I can't face just putting them all back in the cupboards again and if I was happy to sell them I obviously don't need all this 'stuff''. I'm not exactly Marie Kondo and I certainly don't do minimalism by any means- but it had been getting out of hand.

I deleted everything and reuploaded last night so I have 29 days or thereabouts for any further sales.
