Car Tax/VED Not Cancelled

This the second time it's happened when buying a used car but the car tax hasn't been cancelled after the car was registered to me. Last time (in 2019) it was active for 6 months before it stopped and I needed to renew and currently it's showing as valid until Jan 2025.

Has anyone else found this? I'm assuming there is some form of bug in the DVLA system in that the issue of a V5C doesn't always cancel any tax in place. The only way I can think it could happen is if the previous owner used the new keeper slip to setup the payment but having now happened a second time, it seems more than just one error.

That's definitely happened as I have the new V5C in my name. 2 weeks on and the tax is still showing as valid. I'm waiting to see if it gets cancelled next month. If they have been paying on DD and get charged another month it might prompt them to cancel the DD but I guess that might only take effect as of April.
Like I say it happened with a previous car as well and the tax on that was valid for 6 months after purchase and again I had the V5 in my name.

Wouldn't it cancel when you applied to pay the VED/tax yourself though?

It might do but if I go to the DVLA site it tells me the car is taxed until Jan 2025 so no tax is due. I can't see why I'd want to cancel the existing tax and pay over £400 if I don't need to.

    Screen message is:

Your vehicle will be taxed from 01 February 2024 Are you aware that your vehicle's current tax is not due to expire until 01 January 2025? However, if you have been told to tax by DVLA, please continue with the transaction

That status could change at any time and the fine for driving without VED is £1,000.

No, it's UP TO £1,000, which is a very different thing.

Checking daily but also have kept a screenshot of the message. It specifically says to only do it if told to tax by DVLA which I haven't been.

You must tax a vehicle you’ve bought before you drive it, or declare it off the road (a SORN). The tax is not transferred to you when you buy the vehicle.

Yep that's what's meant to happen. It's now twice that it hasn't with different cars.

Weird one then, last time I did it, I taxed it online using the new keeper supplement, before I set of to drive home, it was taxed at the time by the previous owner as I test drove it first.
