Wouldn't it cancel when you applied to pay the VED/tax yourself though?
It might do but if I go to the DVLA site it tells me the car is taxed until Jan 2025 so no tax is due. I can't see why I'd want to cancel the existing tax and pay over £400 if I don't need to.

    Screen message is:

Your vehicle will be taxed from 01 February 2024 Are you aware that your vehicle's current tax is not due to expire until 01 January 2025? However, if you have been told to tax by DVLA, please continue with the transaction
Why is tax only valid for 11 months - 1 Feb 24 to 1 Jan 2025

Sheramber - I think it means - The previous keeper had it taxed until 1/1/25, but the new owner wants to tax it for 12 months from 1/2/24.

OP, I think you know exactly what is going on and you are taking advantage of the previous owner not knowing they can cancel the VED/road tax. In reality you are stealing from that person. If you are happy doing that, then that's up to you. Hopefully, it's not some poor old pensioner who can't afford their heating because they paid for 12 months road tax on a car they no longer own.

The DVLA has never told me I have to tax my car, but that doesn't mean it wasn't one of the first things I did when I bought it. As above, we all know we have to tax a car when we purchase it.

Zero guilt here. The previous owner will not get a refund for Feb, it just means DVLA would be paid twice. If I can avoid paying for a month that someone else has already paid for then I've no problem doing that. If it carries on after next month I'll look into what I need to do to sort it but there does seem to be a DVLA system problem that isn't cancelling tax when ownership changes.
