1. You reserve your item online, sometimes even give card details, but complete your purchase in store with the payment being taken after collection (not distance selling)
2. You buy your item online, with the payment taken immediately, and have it 'delivered' or picked in store.
The OP (and other posters) seem to have confirmed Argos follow method 2.
It's either buy it on line (collect or delivery), or go to store and buy it there.
It's a no-brainer to buy on line for the extra protection it gives

Argos and some other similar retailers are known for having such a policy unfortunately. Legally the DSR’s should allow a return, but it will be a battle.
Wasn’t it obvious from the box which laptop it was? Why did your daughter open it if she knew she wanted a different one? Even if they would accept a return without quibble, it would mean them having to resell it for less which ultimately puts prices up for everyone because the retailers aren’t going to just accept the hit to their own margins.

Every purchase I’ve made from Argos has been opened by them for inspection on return, regardless of any seals being intact or not. I once returned a sealed and completely unopened expensive phone after ordering and paying online, then click and collect. They broke the seal themselves to inspect and I guess to make sure said item was as it should be. I did find this odd for resale purposes.
I suspect that if OP had indeed returned the box unopened, they would have opened it themselves for an item of that value.6 -
I have bought items in Argos ( ours is a small branch) and been invited to open and inspect the item at the collection counter to be sure I’d made the right choice. Easier than getting all the way home:)0

Website on the bottom takes to this page and says thisI've changed my mind
If you've changed your mind and need to return an item, you have 30 days from the date of collection or from the date of delivery to return your item(s).
Your item(s) needs to be:
- Unused and with all original components
- In its original packaging (with the tags if applicable)
- In a resaleable condition security seals intact (where applicable)
- With its proof of purchase
- With any free items that came with the product
- Refunds will be processed by the original payment method. If you paid by card, it can take up to 5 working days to appear back in your account; with PayPal, refunds can take up to 30 days.
- If we are collecting your return, your refund will be processed once we have received and inspected the item.
Your statutory rights are not affected.

No idea how such a prominent company continues to get away with such behaviour.pepsik said:Thankyou all for your advise and help I did complain on their twitter pageand received teh sae response however I kept emailing @sainsburys and using the terms you had stated I have a response from a Tom Walsh so far only asking me to confirm that I am the account holder which I have done I hope to hear back from him today or I will be using your tenplate the lunatic in my head thankyou so much for it I could never have written that.
