Question about Glass for Bathroom Mirror
Comments
-
I have a 'bespoke' frame in my bathroom. It's just ordinary glass as with only me and not any vapour to speak of it's not a problem.I was going to get the frame without the mirror and take it to the local glaziers but the framers owed me a favour and put the mirror in thinking they were being accommodating
. They are really good with all sorts and can order and advise on all the different types, probably know the for and againsts of each too. I used to work for a small furniture manufacturers where we made bespoke frames and I would phone the glaziers with the size and type then collect it. They are very used to this. The one thing you do need to consider is the fittings on the back because you probably want it to fit flush to the wall - so the depth of the frame will decide this. The ones that the framers fitted (again thinking they were being helpful) very nicely didn't allow for a screw to be used safely. At the moment I've stretched some picture chord between them and slim picture hooks.I have every intention to look into a better way.....................but I'd bet it's still there years on as I'll forget
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
viral kindness .....kindness is contageous pass it on

I'd also go to a glass firm rather than framer. Order bevelled glass, it looks much better in a frame.
You can also add a heater pad to the back so it doesn't steam up. Just get it fixed properly rather than trying to get shatterproof glass.Signature on holiday for two weeks1 -
Hi, I am a framer, so answering from that perspective.
I must admit, it has never occurred to me to offer anything other than a standard mirror glass, as I am looking at it from an aesthetic point of view. The thousands of framing choices makes it unique, although I do tend to recommend bevelled mirrors for that extra detail.
I am struggling to understand the need for anything different for safety in a bathroom, over any other room. Is it because you may be in bare feet? Do you worry about a mirror in the bedroom or hallway? Or any other picture frame? They all have the potential to fall and smash if you think about it.
When I frame mirrors, I use mirror plates or security fixings as standard, purely as they tend to weigh more and often require additional strengthening. So I honestly think you have nothing to worry about. Your framer can provide any size or shape mirror, and you can choose whatever frame you desire to make it unique.
Hope that helps allay fears a little?1 -
If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.2 -
1. Have a look at https://www.allbrightglass.co.uk/
2. They are in Northfields Avenue within the borough of Ealing, West London
3. Have used them a number of times over the last 50 years and they've always been first class.1 -
@ChasingtheWelshdream yes, the reason I am worried is that in a bathroom, not only do you have bare feet, there are lots of hard surfaces, including the floor, which would make a breakage more likely and more dangerous. Having said that, when I posted originally I was thinking about hanging the mirror like a picture, as is the current one, but if it is screwed to the wall, as others have suggested then there is very little risk so have laminated mirror glass probably doesn't matter.@nofoollikeold thank you - that is extremely helpful as they look excellent and are not a million miles from me.0
