    WEP?

have checked settings and they are on WPA-PSK the key that i am meant to enter is already written in the box at the bottom? Am i missing something now?

So the router was pre-configured with a simple 8 character WPA key and this was printed on a piece of card.

What operating system is on the laptop? You could try using a HEX key e.g. 23EC2182AB

  • use wpa-psk/tkip on the router and pc, type any password you like, 8 characters or more into router, click apply, do the same on pc.

You should be able to use the supplied one, on the card, but you can change this to anything you want, you just need to make sure the pc is using wpa-psk/tkip, not wep, and the passwords match.

It depends what standard you have on the laptop. If it is 802.11g set the router to g only.

in the sky box there is a card that has ssid network key and channel on it.

this is obviously preprogrammed as you say. When i click on connect on the wireless connection it brings up ssid X needs a network key so i assumed you put in what is on the card?

the router shows the network key on card but when i match this when i try to connect computer says no??? im on xp i think?

Are you sure that you are actually trying to connect to your router?

Change the SSID to a different name and then click apply.

You say that you are using XP but it needs to be XP SP2 for WPA encryption to work - is it?

yeh sure as its the same id on the sky card howeverit won't change the name now as you have suggested? Also whatever i changed with the router i now do not get the network key box come up it just says the router is no longer available!!!

the other question is i can connect to another router that we used to use but still cant access internet i was able to do this before i had sky!

There is absolutely no reason not to configure the router exactly how you want e.g. change the SSID to something unique and use a proper 63 character encryption key as eight characters is low security.

You won't be able to use an old router from another ISP as your Sky router has your Username/Password pre-programmed into it. It is possible to extract this but I should forget that for now, as you are having so much trouble with such a simple set-up procedure.

Are you using XP SP2? Windows key + Pause/Break

yes it all seems simple but there is obviously something im missing !
  • If you go into the router config, does it say

    ssid skyxxxxx

    WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)

and have the 8 character key on the card?

if so, find this screen in the wireless config on pc,

    3073701.gif

click add, enter the ssid, wpa-psk select tkip, enter same key twice in same case, tick connect when in range
