    As molerat said.

A long while ago on another thread on here we were talking about binning yacky stuff in street bins so it wasn't sat festering in your own bin. The outpouring of people who posted that it was illegal surprised me, because I didn't know it was illegal. But it is.

It has been known for people to put papers in public bins which feature their name and address, and the council fish them out and prosecute the "offender"

I do not throw anything away, without making sure personal details have all been removed, like labels and letterheads. Then I rip those bits up into tiny little pieces and bury them in my kitchen bin with the tea bags etc, so they disintegrate!

Is it time I got a shredder????
  • I wouldn't go out and buy a shredder myself.

I burn letters (or the pertinent bits of letters) in my garden. In my last house I did it at the bottom of the garden. I dug a bit of a hole in the soil then slung them in and set fire to them, then put the soil back on top. Here I usually only burn the addressy bits but do it on the gravel with a full watering can at the side of me. If anybody can get my details after either of those methods - well they deserve them ha haa!
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.

A few years ago now we gave some boxes to a friend of my wife's, who gave them to her sister to help her house move. A few months later, I got a letter through the post from a local council with a fly tipping fine - the boxes (still with our address) had been found dumped.

They were found around 50 miles away from where we live, so it was easy to get out of the fine, but I learned a lesson that day.

Distance isn't normally a reliable defence though - flytippers don't limit themselves to tipping just down the road.

Did you have to tell the council who you gave the boxes to?

Yes, gave them all the details - no idea if they took it any further as my wife soon thereafter became estranged from that friend... She (and her sister) were in a neighbouring council region, and the letter to us was from that council.

I recall it was easier than I thought it would have been to dispute it. It was over 10 years ago now though.

Council Wheelie bin found in Ukraine

The World is small. I did read somewhere that bins might be chipped?

YoungBlueEyes, my garden is so small, if I used that method, I would probably set fire to the shed and fence!

The only reason I know about this is a friend was volunteering at a church stall and reading letters (back in the day) and once replied to threw the old ones away in the nearest bin.
She was fined! Crazy stuff as they didn't take up much room. Sje could have been writing on the nearest bench.
But back then we were shown a yellow card for putting a recyclable object in the wrong bin. A red and fined for a second offense. That quickly disappeared.

Now I asked 'did I get the boxes mixed up' and they said as long as all the stuff that should be was in one box that was ok with them.

Of course now we have yet another company. One flier said we start on the 6th Feb, online the 13th Feb but the old company was picking up 29th Jan.
Thinking this out keeps the brain alive though  :D

I have been known to put a tray that held prawns in a public bin though. I can't stand that smell for 3 weeks.
Rubbish every week and recycling, which doesn't smell, every 3 weeks would make more sense.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

The so-and-so Council merely closed down my logged question, about whether there are any smaller waste wheelie bins.... without even the courtesy of sending me a reply!

So, I have now logged a Complaint re Poor Service. And I have asked again, if they do have smaller size bins available for people like me.... and if not, why not?  (Also, I added the comment from one of the Posters above, about other Councils providing smaller ones, to encourage more recycling.)

Yes, if you look at the underside of the reinforced lifting edge of the bin - opposite the hinges - you'll see a cylindrical hole. It may be empty, or it may contain a chip covered by a sticker. My garden waste bin has this but the chip is not yet used for billing.
One day soon the bin wagon will weigh your bin as it lifts, identify you by the chip and bill you for your waste by weight.
